We purchased an electric fence and the first training session is to take the dog out on a leash into the yard. Well I've started to do that but my dog goes outside and then sits down and acts like I'm punishing him. He will not budge on the leash. He does fine on walks and will even go out in front (no fense/flags) and go to the bathroom. It's just that in the back yard that the behavior occurs. The back yard does have a 4 foot fence all around (the electric underground is for the perimeter where the plants/flowers are). I can't even get him to walk toward the flags so I can correct him on the leash. It's been about a week now. Any suggestions??? Allen

Are you positive that the range isn't so high that the dog feels he's in the only safe place in the backyard?
If you've confirmed that the range is short and correct then I'm guessing your dog had a spontaneous meeting with the e-fence which has scared him.

You might try removing the collar and taking him out on leash to do perimeter training on a plain collar only. Once he's no longer afraid to go out there then you can do controlled perimeter training with the collar on.

He hasn't even gotten to the shock phase. He's learning on the leash first without the shock collar so he's never been zapped. Allen
