And another question while I'm at it, can I feed my hamster nuts? If yes, how often? Do they have to be fresh or can they be a bit older (obviously not bad!)?

Nuts contain a lot of FAT I would only give it to the hamster once a week if you must. Most hamster food contain nuts as well so don't overdo it. Nuts stay edible for quite some time so as long as they haven't gone bad it's ok to give it to him.

Exactly, too many nuts will eventually make the hamster fat. Give it only as a treat if the hamster is not too chubby, otherwise it won't be healthy!
