Approx 4 yrs ago momma feral shows up on a winter day and I fed her. The next day she showed up with a kitten, and the following day another kitten. Thank goodness that was all that arrived. One kitten apparently met some demise and came up missing after a couple of weeks. I have since fed the other two daily and kept the garage cracked so they had a safe place to sleep. I am currently moving into a new home some five miles away. I started working with momma a few months ago and got her comfortable to step inside the house where I quickly closed the door behind her, much to her dismay. However, after doing this daily for several weeks she became accustomed to being inside so much so that she would literally knock on the door wanting in. At first she was very afraid of hands, but like to be rubbed only on the back end and only if she didn't know it was a hand. Then eventually she enjoyed it so much she started coming around more often to the point now she irritates the crap out of me wanted petted anywhere all the time! I have managed to trap her and move her to the new house as an indoor cat where she has adjusted well. However, her feral son, a big black beautiful black cat has been more difficult. I can't get him back in the garage to narrow the trapping field. He comes every night at 8 p.m. to eat or sometimes just hang out, I think waiting for mom to come home. He will come as far as the front door, but will not come inside. I keep the trap set out at the front door so he becomes accustomed to it being there. However he acts like he knows exactly what it is and what I am trying to do. He did not see momma trapped as it occurred indoors. But both have been trapped and neutered via SPCA program about 3 yrs ago. So he knows what a trap is. I bought a larger trap because he is tall, not so much fat. I have tried every cat food, tuna, fish, beef, and even the KFC trick to no avail. I am currently doing the placing the food near the trap at feeding time. Sometimes he will eat there and sometimes he will meow until I move the food away from the trap a foot or so. He will eat a little, but not his usual belly full like when mom was there. Tonight I put out some strips of KFC and his dry kibble, neither of which he touched. I have been going over to the old house every night for the last 2 weeks trying to trap him with no success. Can't put house on the market til I get him. Sometimes he will allow me to sit outside at the front door with him 8 to ten feet away for up to an hour or more unless something spooks him. Any suggestions on what else to try or just keep going over and winning him over by sitting outside with him and slowly moving the food closer to the trap. But frankly I think he knows exactly what it is. I have covered it, uncovered it, put cardboard all over it inside and out to disguise it, hung toys in it, put burlap in it, on it, and laid tree trimmings over to to disguise it to no avail. Ugh, I need help. I can't just abandon him.
