Hi all,
Greetings from the Badgerland. I am looking for a German Shepherd as a family dog - companion. I have owned shepherds before and would like to be sure of the dog's good health and of course to have confidence in the dog's freedom from genetic problems. In addition to health, I am concerned about a dog with excellent intelligence and temperament.
After reading this: " rec.pets.dogs: German Shepherd Dogs Breed-FAQ "  I have focused my research on Schutzhund clubs. So far, I have only found one breeder who will guarantee his puppies lifetime-free of genetic ailments with a replacement or refund (owner's choice). http://www.jerland.com These folks are running a high quality operation from what I can tell.
I am looking for other breeders like these folks to compare to. Can anyone provide me with input on Jerland farms, or provide contact information for other breeders?
Thanks much,
Adam

I would suggest that you try this web site: http://leerburg.com/table.htm This guy breeds real German shepherd dogs. Some of his dogs would be too much for what you are probably looking for, but then again, he wouldn't sell you such a dog. As you probably know, all dogs from a single litter are not the same. While some may be suitable for police work; others are more suited to SAR or as a companion. There is lots of good reading at this site and even a forum where you will find other German shepherd breeders.

This guy is also known in working shepherd circles as a mass producer.

Not. Leerburg, ie Ed Frawley does know his GSDs but he also breeds to many, IMO.
Here is a very good breeder.

Though she is very selective to who gets one of her pups.

Indeed. And he fosters out many, many bitches for varies homes. Most to make the ticket ie for breeding program, which is good but he breeds to many, IMO. Especially considering there is no shortage of good GSDs in rescue around US.

Adam,
I looked at their website and didn't see the contract and guarantee on it. Have you gone to any of the training sessions of local schutzhund clubs or obedience clubs and seen the shepherds there? If you see some dogs you like it would be a good idea to ask where the dogs came from and what sort of contract the breeder has.

Hi Beth,
I agree. Though I have found that many breeders don't place that part readily on their Web page. Often they will send it to you once you have inquired or filled out application. At least I found this to be true when looking for Pems and tibetan spaniels, Schipps when I was doing my research on one of these breeds.

I have followed his web site for some time, and there are very few breedings a year that I can see. Perhaps at one time breedings were more frequent.

That is possible. I know at one time, several years ago he was talking about quitting all together and just selling his training videos.
