Dillemma: wedding plans moving forward. Friends are criticizing my plans to make my dogs wear flowers around their necks for the ceremony. Criticism is generally about them being BOYS, not about how its cruel to make a dog wear a flowery collar for 10 minutes. Bow ties were suggested as alternatives.
My feelings are that dogs are dogs. They dont' need to be worried about stupid human gender roles. Kavik's white fur would look lovely with flowers on it. Just gorgeous.
If folks arguments were that putting costumes on dogs is horrible, that I would get. But I don't get that boy dogs have to be macho, or have to play the same stereotype as a human male. I think its a bizarro concept. Dogs like flowers, or at least mine do. They spent hours last summer in my garden sniffing all the different flowers. Was adorable.

Do you think costumes on dogs is cruel?
Do you think boy dogs should wear bow ties instead of flowers?

Hi and congratulations =)
I don't think dressing up dogs is cruel as long as the dog doesn't mind, or there is a good reason for it.
I put scarves on my dogs sometimes when we get guests, it increases the dogs cuteness factor a little, and people who are not totally comfortable around dogs seem to be more ready to beleive that they are actuallt very friendly dogs =)
A girl who had the biggest black great dane i've ever seen, said that when she was walking him on a chain leash people sometimes crossed the street to avoid them. After she changed the leash and put a bandana on the dog more people started to stop to pet the dog =)
In my opinion bow ties don't look very good on most dogs, but on small shorthaired dogs they can look cute.. To me the flower idea seems much nicer, and people standing a bit farther away are also going to notice the flowers much better than a bow tie.
I totally agree that dogs are dogs, and i don't see why a male dog shouldn't wear flowers, if fact i think that's silly =) Even if it is unlikely that the dogs will eat the flowers, make sure you don't use anything that could be harmful to the dog if it started to chew on it's decoration.

Do you think costumes on dogs is cruel?

Cruel, no, but I do think it does something to their dignity. I see dogs sulking a bit when in costumes - and yes that is me intrepreting, so who knows. I just think it lacks respect, but then I don't like costumes anyway.
Do you think boy dogs should wear bow ties instead of flowers?

I vote for flowers. They are prettier, boy or girl.

Repeat after me: "My wedding, my dogs, my rules." Unless, of course, BoyToy is the one complaining. Your friends can do what they want at their weddings.
Ditto. Think Hawaiian leis. Nothing feminine about them.

Cruel? Well, no. I don't think most dogs enjoy it. In a lot of the pics I've seen of dogs in costumes, the dogs look barely tolerant, to miserable. I don't consider fancy collars as 'costumes'. Dressing up some poor dog like a bumble bee, complete with wings, body coverings, and antennae, to me, is disrespectful and not something I'd subject my dogs to.

Not necessarily. I wouldn't put flowers on Winston, but his ears are cropped, and he's a very serious looking dog. A bow tie is approprite for him. If I had a fluffy white male dog, and I thought the flowers would look pretty, I'd put flowers on him.. kinda seems appropriate for a wedding.

boytoy wouldn't dare complain. the dog thing is the only thing we are doing my way.
at least i will know the dogs won't complain to their therapist that i made them dress like girls when they were little!! My friends can complain for them to their therapists.

Yes, if the dog fights it or fusses with it or seems uncomfortable. No, if the dog doesn't seem to mind.
Do you think boy dogs should wear bow ties instead of flowers?

No. It's your wedding, after all. Dress your boys the way you want, and if they don't think that boys don't wear flowers, or don't act as if flowers are uncomfortable, that's all that matters.

Isn't it amazing how many things people can find to criticize?
