Greetings everyone,
I am proud to announce that Queenie is now a graduate of beginning Doggie Manners class. She received her diploma last night.

She performed excellently at graduation, winning both the "Musical Chairs" and "Puppy Pushups" (12 in 30 seconds!) competitions.

Let's not discuss "leave it." We can't excel in every area.

Subject: biting and attention
Date: 1999/10/13
I hope I'm not being a pest,(I have at least one
question a week) but I've never owned a lab
before and I think my 8month old lab/shepherd
has severe problems.
This newsgroup made me realize she is normal.
Her major problem is biting but I'm told labs and
shepherds are both bad for that as puppies.
Tonight I went to answer the phone and she took
my arm and wouldn't let go. I had to hang up as
my arm still has puncture wounds.
Has anyone had this problem?
I think she gets upset that all my attention is not on her anymore. (I do spend a lot of time with
her and everyone tells me that I spoil her too much)

She also bites when she needs to go outside.
Any suggestions?

Subject: housebreaking good but now bad

My 5 month old puppy was doing very well for a bit with his housebreaking and now he seems to ... at the door. He gets treats when he comes in (after going potty only). What can I do? HELP! Thanks!

Congratulations!
I'd say we were proud of you, but the rest of this group collectively wish to be disassociated with me. So I'll speak for myself Way to GO!

Heh. We had musical sits and musical downs. Khan won musical downs, but lost the sits competition. While I'm sure he can do speedy downs, there will be much vocal accompaniment if I make him do a lot of puppy pushups.

LOL! One of the tests we had involved recall, walking about 30 ft. with all sorts of distractions. While he did fine with other distractions, the pile of hotdog bits got him. Both his 'Leave It' and 'Drop It' are rock solid now. He's left all sorts of yummies - half rotten deer parts, leftover KFC bits, etc. when I've asked him to.

Zoe was similar she was really not happy about endless repitition, and she seems to feel that "endless" equals more than 3. Queenie will follow the treat anywhere, until she finally gets it. This is both a strength and a weakness... the closest contender last night did 9 pushups and then just stayed down you could just see that she was done.

What a good boy!
Funny you should mention half rotten deer parts, as we had an incident last weekend... both girls actually DID "leave it" which amazed me and also proved that my fear of god voice is improving.

Congratulations!
May I suggest that I think "puppy push-ups" was probably one of the worst things we ever taught our Bella and that she still has trouble understanding that down means down and not down & pop right back up into a sit? I should have dealt with that right away, but didn't.

Oops. Yes, we're having a bit of trouble with our down-stay too.

Catherine
& Zoe & Queenie, actually staying anywhere is a bit difficult!
