Just stumbled upon this group recently...wanted to say Hi. I've been using Usenet for years but never thought of a Herp group. My surprise!
Frogs and Toads are my thing, although I have owned snakes and lizards.

Currently I have a nice 55 gal Fire-bellied toad set-up. These little inexpensive animals are about the funnest frogs I've ever owned!
Mostly diurnal, voracious eaters, and pretty colors all in an easy to take care of package.
My next project will be a tall tree-frog tank I think (the tank is tall, not the frogs)
Wanted to get into Dart frogs but decided I really wouldn't be able provide ample amounts of fruit flies.
Wife wont go for the culturing in the house.
By the way,for you veteran herpers out there..
How do I explain a $75 vet bill for a $5 toad?
She seemed a little...err..."sticker-shocked"
Anyways...hello all...

Just tell her, life is precious and you can't really put a price on it. Or just compare it to bill from your doctor/hospital/clinic, then it looks like a real bargain.

Well hello Alex! Nice to have new people come into the mix, even nicer when they are frog people, at least in my opinion.
Never excuse your selection of animal just because it was cheaper than what most everyone keeps! I love Fire-Bellies. I will be setting up a large tank for some very soon myself. The water side will be mirrored with no substrate so as to get the full effect of their brightly colored bellies (this tank is for public viewing in a children's museum).

As for the vet bills, I know how you feel. Today I called vets in my area to find someone to help me out with the large number of frogs that will soon be coming my way. I ended up having to settle with a vet that will help me out with the medical stuff as long as I can help him diagnose the problems! Hah! You should have heard some of the responses I got from the receptionists when I told them what type of animal I was wanting to have treated though!
If you don't mind me asking, what area of the world are you in? If it's close to Northern Florida, maybe you can come check out the Frog Exhibit we are building at the museum. We have set the opening for the second week in February.
Welcome to the group again!

Welcome! I too have a penchant for frogs and toads, and have 4 Firebellies myself. Cute little critters! Of course, at this point I'm more focused on my tarantulas, but I love my frogs just as much as I always did. Welcome to the group, it's a great bunch of people!

Why doesn't she understand that its a pet? Would she rather see an animal suffer and be sick?

Hehe...now Im backpeddling
I didnt mean to imply that my wife is uncaring or mean... (glad she doesnt read newsgroups..forgive me)
She doesnt get into this hobby of mine but doesnt try to restrict me either.
She understood completely why I had to go to the vet and wouldnt want me to let the critter die.
I think it was just the shock of animal cost vs vet bill.
No go on the fruit fly culturing though..
