What breed? What are you feeding? How much and how often?

Was the diagnosis made by the vet? What has the vet asked you to do?

I am more familiar with HOD in giant breed dogs. There, the general advice is to drop the protein/fat content waaay down, and slow down the growth. Basically, the recommendation is to feed a high quality adult dog food. I don't know if this would apply to smaller dogs; you might want to check with the vet.

How much is one bowl? Make sure you're not overfeeding the pup, and use measuring cups, so you know exactly how much she's eating.

In which case, your questions and concerns should be addressed to him.

i work with him so i can update him everyday on her progress, i was just comming here to see if anyone had any experience, and i thank you Suja for the help, diddy on the other hand only joins conversations to belittle people and make herself feel superior and is not much help to anyone. Its like everytime i come through here seeking some words of wisdom or guidence, the responses remind me why this place is only frequented by self righteous losers. you guys wonder why new people dont come back!

Pete,
When I worked for the referral hospital there were some cases of HOD. I specifically remember a rottweiler and a golden.
The advice that Suja gave about the feeding was what I remember too. Good luck and I hope all goes well.

this morning i actually asked the doctor about the feeding thing and he said in his experience it hasnt made a diff, so i'm going to go with him on this. Thanks for the insight beth, i will research it a little more and ask some more opinions here at the animal hospital i work at there are over 30 vets, i'll see what most of them say. here's the link to the hospital it's a pretty cool place.. www.oradell.com

Maybe if it doesn't make a difference one way or the other, it wouldn't hurt to do a short trial on adult food (less than 24% protein, ~12% fat) to see if your pup responds to it.
In Danes (and other giant breeds), it makes substantial difference to immediately lower the protein/fat content, so I'm not sure why your vet hasn't seen it in his practice.

Hmm.. sounds odd. I've been doing lots of research on this type of stuff since I got my GSD.. and the major thing i've learned is WATCH what they eat!
Are you sure you trust this vet? How many cases of this has HE dealt with before? Regardless of whether you/he think it makes a difference you really should be measuring the amount of food you are feeding. You never did say how much was in a "Bowl" but I'm hoping it's no more than 1 cup for the age (4 months?) of your dog. Any extra weight your doggie has to carry around is only making it worse.
