My lovebird is being driven crazy by the band that someone put on his leg when he was a chick. He bites it all the time and it drives him nuts. How can it be taken off so he can be free of it?

A vet can easily remove it. Usually it is done with a small, metal-cutting snips that will slip between the band and the leg.

With the kind most likely on him I have done it with a file, while someone holds the bird with a towel. With our Macaw it was thicker than my wedding band. That one I had the vet remove while she had the bird under to chip him.

Why did they even put it on in the first place? Is it a legal requirement or something?
What does the stuff on them mean, anyway?

Assuming it's a closed band, it shows the bird was born in captivity. The info would show who and where, and when you bought the bird you got a bill of sale using the band info. That was why I had the Macaws taken off while he was being microchiped. I still have the band just in case. They are a hazard, but some places require a breeder to use them. It's a way to show the bird was not taken from the wild for one thing.

Yes, that it is.

No, we paid the lady cash and got no receipt.

I see. I tried google and found these things about bands:

When I took the one off our Conure it was a chore. Took 2 of us. Wife held him in a towel while I carefully used a small file on the band. We did it in a couple installments over a couple days. The damn things scare me. I was always afraid the birds would manage to get the damn thing caught on something when I was not right there. If you do not want to do it yourself a groomer or vet will do it for you, but I would take it off soon.

very true. I often tell people who say "I just would never have a gun in my home", something along the lines of "well that's fine, the bad people have to eat too, so you will make a nice victim".
