DI went to the closest reptile shop (only one I know, actually) to get feeders today. I asked for 6 adult mice and a bunch of pinkies, and when I got around to opening the box of mice, I saw these pretty, silky/satiny long-haired LITTLE skinny mice. They're so cute! So useless! Do they eventually get as large as regular white mice if I grow them up for awhile? And I got a young savannah monitor. Not a teeny baby, but a nice-sized little guy. Couldn't believe all the different colors they had in one tank of savannahs.

I wanted one of each to see what they'd grow up to be, but..figured I better not even though they were only $15. And they had Solomon Island skinks for $200 for big ones, $75 for little ones. And a coatimundi and sugar gliders. Hairless rats! Never seen those before. Looked like the biggest pinkies in the world. They had a bunch of different kinds of rodents I hadn't seen. Lots of varieties of corn snakes, a few kings and milks. I was tempted by the Sinaloan milks, I've always thought those were beautiful.

Didn't get one though. Didn't get an albino horned frog or a new green one or a Blodgett's (sp) frog. They had some huge marine toads. A big snapping turtle and a tank full of CUTE teeny baby aquatic turtles of all kinds.
And they had short 10- and 20-gallon tanks for turtles, I guess. Never saw those before.
I got a bag of cypress mulch, opened it up awhile ago, started putting it into my tegu's tank and it is full of ROACHES. Yuk! I closed it up, rushed it outside and left it where the sun will shine on it all day. Will that bake the roaches out?? I am so grossed out!!! I was going to get some hissing cockroaches, but forgot. $1 each, is that average?
I love getting to look at lots of herps. There was a LOT more than I mentioned.

Just feed off the roaches to your critters, silly.

I saw hissers on "clearance" for $0.75 each, so, there you go.

You deserved to get roaches in your cypress mulch Cindy! Our cypress swamps are endangered & they need our help. I have to air my complaints in a public forum but our cypress swamps are in need of our help. Well my friend at least you know I'm honest;^) Please find another substrate that doesn't endanger our beautiful old cypress swamps. snake lady

GEEZ you're mean! Emotion: wink
Okay, so what do you recommend that looks nice and isn't toxic or dusty. I've been using aspen shavings, but didn't like the dust. I like my tanks to be pretty, and newspaper doesn't do it for me.

I don't like topsoil because it turns to mud and sticks to everything. I saw some mushroom compost that was kind of like humus, but chunky, not too fine. Would that work? Had no perlite or any additives in it.

Coconut pith. It comes in compressed blocks about the shape of a brick. Add water and it swells to five times its original volume. Looks like dirt, holds moisture, burrows, etc. It also works as a planting medium. Save yourself some money and buy it from a nursery, pet stores at least double the price.

Can it mold? How often it must be changed? I have one of these bricks and sooner or later I'll use it to set up a viv.
