I was chatting with my coworkers the other day and the conversation drifted to pets, and then to stories of people being injured by their dogs - knocked over, run over, dragged, wrapped by leashes, etc. Bones were broken, skin was ripped, bruises were made, etc. The consensus was that dogs are often a cause of injury to people, and not just by biting. How many here have been injured by dogs, or know someone who has?

i don't know how many times Lola has bonked me in the head with that thick pit bull skull of hers. it usually happens when i'm bending down for a good morning kiss, and she jumps up to meet me halfway.

she's a menace, that one.

Tripped, trampled, bruised, pinched, ankle & wrist sprains, black eye, scored face...and that's just me in the last 4 years.

My 9yo daughter has been trampled, bruised & had leash-burn. Husband gets off really easy for some reason.
A friend's dog knocked her front tooth out so now she has a partial.

I haven't been injured by my dogs. I train them.

Heh - good thing I love 'em.
Not counting the many many times I was bumped, clawed and knocked over...

Dylan broke my finger when she lunged - my fault, I was holding the leash improperly. And a couple of times she tried to bend my knees sideways with body slams.
Poco, my parents' Chihuahua, bit me on the nose, enough to draw blood. My fault again - I was in his face teasing him.
But the best was the Oppie-Dylan tag-team. I was starting out to walk them, and Oppie lurched ahead just as Dylan crossed in front of me. I went over flat on my face. Somehow I escaped with just a few scrapes from the asphalt.

I don't mind coming to work, but that eight hour wait to go home is a ***.

i wondered who'd say that first. :-)
what about other people's dogs? i met a woman at the dog park who was on crutches. she was recovering from surgery on her knee. seems some random Lab had slammed into her from the front, popping her knee out and backwards. the owner saw her on the ground, and said, "sorry, you know how dogs are", then left.

Well, I can't think of many injuries with my dogs being that they are wimpy collies. They don't pull, they don't jump up, and they are fairly mellow.

That said, when I'm training with the clicker, I do have to work on "Gentle! (dammit!)". Normally Pablo, for example, is very good about taking treats but when he's gotten a click and is very keen on that forthcoming treat, he'll rake my finger or palm skin with those sharp incisors of his.

Twice I've jumped in the middle of dog fights (one serious, one minor) and in both cases my only injury was one or two bent back/torn off nails/ bloody nail beds from grabbing canine body parts. Considering that I was in the middle of *** off dogs who possess pointy teeth, I think I came out of it pretty good.
In my old neighborhood in Pittsburgh, there was a clueless woman who let her extremely happy Shepherd mix zoom around while on a flexi. Once, while wearing shorts, I was caught up in the flexi rope and got a nasty rope burn on the back & side of both knees.

Knocked cold bending down to put Lucky Lab's feed bowl down, just as he was raising his head to say THANKS, MOM!
Several years later his son got me in the exact same way, but this time I only ended up with one heck of a shiner.
Now, imagine your co-workers nodding and saying, "Uh-huh." when you try to explain that you got decked by a Lab.

I;ve had several dog related injuries, but the dogs weren't necessarily the cause! Just seems that I can be pretty klutzy while involved in dog events. Have broken a foot playing ball with a dog in the yard (kicked the picnic table in bare feet). Broke a knee jumping over a ring gate at a flyball tournament. Have fallen over dogs who have run TO me instead of running along side. OUCH - no broken bones from that though, maybe a few bruises.
