I'm a sucker for those Flying Nun ears. Congratulations on the new pup.

T'anks. I think I need to put up a short video of the way he wags his feet move almost like he's doing the Twist, because his whole butt is shaking back and forth.

Well, David's inspiration for thinking it was a Southern name comes from a song he heard once, with a line about "Virgil, come see Robert E. Lee". Which is admittedly a pretty thin hook to put it on!

"The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down." "Virgil Caine is my name." I would tend to avoid that one - it ends "You can't raise a Caine back up when he's in defeat." It's about being on the losing side.

I think you should name him Gus.
There. Now, do I get the r.p.d dinosaur award?

George was "Mr Kitty."
Skeeter was "Mr. Poppy." His Bichon housemate was (and, I guess, is) named "Fally Foo Foo."

That's the bestest name yet.

Nope, considering that name came up in .breeds a full 2 hours before your post.
("Gus" was among my first rpd Deja search subjects.)

If you want a truly southern name and one that sounds similar to Buddy, go with Bubba. Other suggestions for southern male names from my experience in SC:
Bo/Beau
Beaufort
Cole
Earl
Rusty
Travis
I am fond of a pair of names given to some mutts my dad's gf got near Greenville, SC when I was a teenager. We named them Rufus and Festis.

Well, I passed Melinda's comment re: Virgil onto David, who agrees that's probably right ("but I just like Joan Baez", speaking of non sequiturs). (He also said "I didn't realize the 'dog newsgroup' was going to help me raise him." I said "I think you should take all the help you can get!")
And one more thing I tried the suggestion tonight about taking some of his pee outside and sprinkling it on the grass (it was easy to get some...when I got home, I let him out of his den and put his leash on, and he started leaking, so I said "wotthehell" and got a plastic container, and then just knelt on the floor and hugged him, holding the container in the appropriate location, and he got so excited he obliged me by filling it halfway). But he won't go anywhere near his own pee outside. It's almost like he's afraid of it, so there's something else going on here. Maybe? He has no problems pooping outside. David's now thinking UTI or crystals or something, so he's going back to the vet to either rule this out or treat it.
He is such a sweet dog. You can tell he really wants to please us. He's starting to get much more relaxed and confident, which is good. Only two problems, the peeing outside thing and the puppy chewing thing, like chewing David's CPAP mask...while David was still in it!

Blood just started gushing from my eyes. Thanks tons.

I think Friday is a much better name than Jade for Friday, but he probably wouldn't even mind being called something really dumb like Pumpkin the way you treat him.

Reading between the compliment, I think that you're trying to encourage the unsuspecting to name their dog "Pumpkin": AS IF THAT WOULD MAKE THE NAME ALL RIGHT.
(Later in the evening, stage left)
Ah, I see it was your daughters who came up with "Pumpkin." That's a mighty fine name.
