Our dog Buckley is a five month old Beagle crossed with a Cavalier. He is much more beagle than cavalier. While he is very cute, he has some naughty and wierd tendencies.
Firstly, he has a totally spac hour just after dinner every night, where he runs wildly around the back yard for no reason. If he bangs his head he still keeps running until he eventually calms down. Is this normal? Would anybody know why beagles would do this?

Secondly, he has started to dig little holes to hide bones in the back yard. I'm a bit worried he'll start to dig bigger holes. He is left home alone most days while my fiance and I work, but has not yet been very destructive. Do beagles normally begin to dig bigger holes?

We are new beagle owners so any advice would be helpful.

If he's been in a crate and left alone for the day, he's likely just burning off energy. (We call it the zoomies - running just for the joy of running.) And if he's been alone all day, he is excited to have you home and is showing it. But an hour of continuous running sounds a little extreme to me.
Have you taken him for a walk before this time? If you try to play with him - throwing balls, playing keepaway - does he want to interact with you?

He's almost certainly going to enlarge the holes. Likely he's bored. Is he left in the yard while you're gone or is this a play activity for him while he's out in the yard for a brief period? Some dogs dig, some don't. I'd be concerned that he is going to find a way to tunnel out of the yard - once a spot has been dug once, the soil is softer and easier to dig in the next time. Loose in a yard is not my first choice for keeping my dog safe while I'm gone. They do get bored and they do escape.

Firstly, he has a totally spac hour just after dinner every night, where he runs wildly around the back yard ... with. If he's just doing this in the back yard, and not in the house, you have an excellent beagle!

Regarding digging and beagles and lunar landscapes, it's all a part of being a beagle!
Expect it.
If your beagle isn't a chronic howler/barker/escape artist/digger, it's taking after the cavalier side. If it has a healthy heart, it's taking the better aspects of the beagle side, because heart problems and cavs are twin sisters!

that's the zippy-zoomies. it is a perfectly normal behavior. it's also very entertaining to watch, so i suggest that you enjoy the show.

it's impossible to tell if he'll start digging larger holes. beagles, and many other dogs, dig, period big holes, little holes, and all sizes in between. digging is fun, so it's a self-reinforcing behavior. about the only way you can stop him from digging is to supervise him whenever he's outside.

With the running, I wouldn't worry too much. My beagle does the same thing He's a purebred and runs through the house like a mad man and wacks his head into our coffee table and the couch and such. Not sure about the digging though.
