My heart is heavy as I post this, but looks like this story is going to have a good ending.

I saw this video in the news a few hours ago. It shows a dog sticking by the side of another dog that has apparently been injured in the disaster. The dog isn't leaving but trying to attract the people's attention to the injured friend.

They say rescue efforts for animals are happening in Japan as well as for humans. I've googled a bit and came across Kenn Sakurai's Facebook account where he comments on the two dogs. Kenn Sakurai appears to be President of Butch Japan that help import safe dog and cat food in Japan and they are currently assisting in the animal rescue efforts. Here's a couple of updates from his Facebook wall:

15th March:

This is what it's like when we could find the dogs at the actual disaster area. The white has gotten weak but the brown one is not allowing to get closer. The TV crew shot this. We have already got these dog. But it too two hours to take them to the closest shelter. The guys who had done that had the bigger plastic cage on the back of the bike. Having such weight on the back is risky for going the way with no road.

16th March:
Those two dogs are rescued. The one which came close to the camera is in the better condition. The other White, Gray and Black was weak. So it is in the vet clinic in Ibaraki Prefectre. The other dog is in the shelter of the same area.
But please know that those two are just the tip of the iceberg. There are more and we need help.

In the news report I watched they also added that there are already a lot of calls from people willing to adopt both the dogs. I hope they will be fine and find a good home...

I wish people were more like that...
It was beautiful to watch a dog being so loyal to his friend, it's a lesson of love and caring for us the humans.
That is so sad, in a lovely way though. This had me crying. To see the loyality of that dog just makes me want to sit there and cry. Such a lovely video. I hope that both the dogs are ok.
UPDATE:

The more seriously injured dog is at a clinic in the city of Mito. The one that came to the camera is at a shelter in the same town, receiving necessary help too.

Here is an English translation of the conversation between the two reporters in the clip (taken from here ):

We are in Arahama area. Looks like there is a dog. There is a dog. He looks tired and dirty. He must have been caught in the tsunami. He looks very dirty.

He has a collar. He must be someone's pet. He has a silver collar. He is shaking. He seems very afraid.

Oh, there is another dog. I wonder if he is dead.

Where?

Right there. There is another dog right next to the one sitting down. He is not moving. I wonder. I wonder if he is alright.

The dog is protecting him.

Yes. He is protecting the dog. That is why he did not want us to approach them. He was trying to keep us at bay.

I can't watch this. This is a very difficult to watch.

Oh. Look. He is moving. He is alive. I am so happy to see that he is alive.

Yes! Yes! He is alive.

He looks to be weakened. We need to them to be rescued soon. We really want them rescued soon.

Oh good. He's getting up.

It is amazing how they survived the tremendous earthquake and tsunami. It's just amazing that they survived through this all.
I've been living 5 years in Mito, happy to see he's doing ok.
This is very very sad to think about all the victims of the disaster, both humans and animals. I'm glad this story is one of those that give hope.
Kenn Sakurai never went for those dogs and he is pulling some scam on Facebook asking for donations. The media takes his word and tells that the dogs have been rescued. I think they were not. Kenn Sakurai can't provide any pictures of those 2 dogs but have been uploading pictures of his own dog. He gets angry that people are asking about these 2 dogs, These dogs that made him famous and made people want to send donations to him.
Are you absolutely sure about this anon? I've heard there are lots of scammers, unfortunately, that ask to donate money to help the victims of the eartherquake and tsunami but the money never get to those who need it. I was hoping Kenn wasn't one of them.
I didn't get it whether he was one of the people talking in the video but looks like they were going to rescue the dogs... I hope it was true.
