Hi folks,
I've read there are some foods that cockatiels (and i presume all parrots) should not be given, like avocado & chocolate. Is there a known safe/unsafe foods list maintained somewhere that is a little more extensive?
The main foods that brought this question up for me are dried dates and certain wholegrain wheat breakfast cereals, which our cockatiel seems to enjoy eating with our family at the breakfast table. I don't want to continue giving them if they're bad for him...
Thanks,
Paul

This one was odd.
- *Onions (toxic to birds, small amount ok)
Toxic but small amounts OK?

What's so odd? It simply is saying that it is toxic in large amounts.

It's inconsistent.

The statement may be clumsy, but not really contradictory. While the term " non-toxic in small or limited amounts" or "toxic to birds, but small amount ok" seems relative by statement, it is often true. Water is toxic in large amounts, along with many, many common things. Fe (iron) is another example. When limited in quantity, it is a necessary mineral, but is a quite deadly toxin if taken in too large a dose.

Thanks for that link. Tim will be happy - dates and wheat cereals don't appear on the list! :-)

What's his favorite cereal?

Weet Bix! They're basically just whole wheat & a bit of salt. Very common here in .au and other .uk-influenced countries.

Actually, he's been a lot fonder of dates over the last few days, and will go for them before the cereal every time.
