I'm trying to decide whether to get a dog or not and I have one big issue. I don't have a steady work schedule. Sometimes I'm working at home and other times outside the house. If I'm working outside the house I am gone at least eight hours.
My concern is about how long can a dog hold it? Is it cruel to keep a dog indoors all day and force them to hold it? I can't afford a dog walker and I don't have a fenced in yard. Does the breed of dog make a difference?
Any opinions?

many adult dogs stay home alone daily. Some breeds are happier with the arrangement than others, but most adapt well. "quality time" before and after work is a necessity.

Thanks for the information. Are any breeds better adapted to this lifestyle than others?
I would recommend getting an older dog rather than a puppy. The type of dog would depend on time and energy you can devote to it. Smaller, toy dogs would probably need to go out more frequently, because they don't have as large a capacity as the bigger breeds.

Maybe you could work out some kind of arrangement with a responsible teen ager or one of your neighbors too take the dog out.
