Peaches is going through her first molt. I got her some "molting" food which I put in a separate treat cup in her cage. But, assuming she eats a well balanced diet with her pellets, occasional seed treats and fresh greens and fruits, is this really helpful or simply overkill?

Although I lack the experience that many have here on this forum, I've never felt that extra help of any kind or amount during a molt is overkill. Just don't be surprised if she takes a lot of baths. I used to give mine lukewarm water at that time and she was always splashing it everywhere.
Jill,
Petamine makes an excellent molting food. I don't think it's overkill at all. Molting is stressful for birds, and as long as your birds are offered a good variety of food, I think she'll eat what she needs. I feed my birds Petamine adult, and am going to buy some Petamine molting food for Moki bird today. He's itchy and grumpy~and I keep ending up with little bitty feathers in my nose and eye lashes!

Peaches bathes several times a week in her rather large water dish... it's pretty funny to watch, actually. My two parakeets showed little interest in bathing so it's refreshing (pardon the pun!) to see this bird splashing away )
Can't wait to see how she reacts to the hot summers we have in TN. The vet told me lovebirds like humidity... she's in for the time of her young life.

Yes, they do, at least mine did. I live in Florida where the humidity is so high it's like walking into a shower ... outside!
How did you get your budgies to bathe? I remember trying putting marbles in the bird bath, things like that, and they would just jump in for a sec to peck at the bright things, then fly back up. Nothing at all like either Koto my lovebird did, or like Handel my canary does. Since Buddy's really young, I'd like to encourage that if possible. I don't think he'll bathe in the water dish even though it's large, because it's high up in his cage. It's easier now that I work from my house, because I can hear the canary splashing in the other room. Once he's done, I can just change the water. He gets refrigerated distilled water.

I never had to do anything special. The last pair didn't care for bathing, but prior to them I had a budgie named Buddy too! Buddy loved taking baths; no tricks involved. I'd just hang the bath over the cage door and he was right there. Marbles sound like a good idea; they do love bright stuff!

Re budgies and bathing...My guys only bathe when I have a thick layer of lettuce leaves in their bathtub along with the water. Maybe in Australia, they bathe on rain soaked leaves. Go figure! Mary

You know, I do believe I read that someplace.
