My vet took a look at the body of the dead corn baby this morning, and just called me.
She says the snake basically died of starvation, and it could not have starved in just 30 days. She feels it was not fed well (or at all) prior to me receiving it and my trying to feed it after it going without food for so long made it go into shock.
She's running more tests and sending some of the *** found in the snake to be tested for crypto and other infections.
As for the still-living one, she suggested I try a fluid regimen for a few days, then slowly start giving it nutrients so as not to put it through shock.

Cat thats awful, how anyone can sell you a snake that hasn't fed and then not tell you about it is terrible. The breeder wants shooting. I presume you will be telling them and anyone else who will listen about this. I hope the other one pulls through.

Considering its funny, she called me yesterday morning practically yelling over the phone about how they were eating and healthy when she had them, and then she acted funny when I told her I was going through with the necropsy.

I asked the vet specifically if this type of starvation could happen in the amount of time I had the baby-and she said no.
I hope the other one pulls through too. Its really tiny though. 1/2 the size of a normal newborn corn snake. At least it doesn't appear to be anything contagious.

It may be worthwhile sending her a copy of the report. There's always the outside chance the vet is wrong, but at least it will provide the breeder with some food for thought. If she is at fault, she will know she's been busted, and perhaps change her ways.

I hope he pulls through too. A shame that animals must suffer from the negligence of their keepers.

I hate people like that, who continue to lie to save their reputation when it's obvious that they don't tell the truth. Unfortunately many reptile vendors are like that. I hope you can make the other corn survive.

I hope it was just the starvation and nothing worse. Not that starvation is good, it's cruel and irresponsible to sell an animal that's not feeding as a healthy one.
I hope you can get the other one to eat. Good luck!

that is so terrible. it is so disappointing to hear of a breeder who is careless and dishonest enough to sell a snake that is not eating, and not tell the customer.

eek. i've actually had crypto before (BLECH), but i didnt catch it from herps.

my condolences. i am curious, what makes up the liquid diet you will feed the remaining one? is it just fluids like saline and dextrose?

I was suggested to try water and pedialyte-soaking the corn in it. I'm bringing the baby corn in friday for her to see it. People are still defending the seller (ugh) but my vet thinks that these babies were not fed right-and this level of starvation would take way longer than the time I've had them to kill them.
