Yeah this is what I heard too. Spaying may cause weight gain, especially when the cat gets older.
Yes, it can sometimes lead to weight gain. The best thing to do is switch your cat to either a natural diet, or to holistic foods. Regular retail foods contain a lot of fillers, ash and empty calories that cause weight gain and other health issues. Natural or holisitc foods don't have those things, so your cat will only require enough food to fill its tummy, and won't over eat.
Non-neutered cats expend a lot of energy seeking a mate and reproducing. Neutered cats may eat the same quantity of food but they don't burn off as many calories. Hence possible weight gain.
