HAPPY DANCE!
I lost my funny little chihuahua mix, Dolly, to a stroke in August. Since then, I've occasionally browsed petfinder looking at chihuahuas. A couple of weeks ago, one particularly caught my eye, so I applied to adopt her - a young 15 pound mix named Wonny. She sounded like she'd be a good fit for my household.
After filling out the application and some emailing back and forth with the rescue lady (RL), we were both concerned that Wonny might be too much for my very dominant senior toy poodle Laika and my very soft- natured young Chinese Crested powderpuff Angel - apparently she had started picking on the smaller dogs in her foster home. RL liked my application, though, so decided to bring Wonny over to see how she fit in. So, she and her husband showed up Monday evening for the home visit with not only Wonny, but also with a second brown chi, Jasmine. Jasmine had just come into rescue, and is terrified of men, so they thought that she might be a good match, as I'm single.
As we feared, Wonny was not a hit with my critters. She was a very sweet dog, but her play style was far too rough for Angel, and Laika took an immediate dislike to her, and there was lots of snarling and posturing on both sides.
Jasmine, on the other hand. . . she looks like a larger (weighs about 10 pounds), brown version of Dolly - same huge eyes, ears, and wrinkles between the eyes that lead to a perpetually worried look. I took one look at her and melted. She's around 5 years old and very scared - at first she wouldn't let me touch her, and when she eventually did, she went stiff as a board, but didn't try to bite, which is good. She was relinquished a week ago and only arrived in this foster home a couple of days before the visit. Eventually I did get her to play a bit with a stuffed toy. Laika and Angel both liked her, and I think once she relaxes, she and Angel will have a good time together.

By the end of their visit she was curled up against me with her head on my leg, and not tensing up when I stroked her. So, I passed the home visit, and they had to get the approval of the rescue's board to let me have her. I spent two days on pins and needles, and I got the email yesterday, and she'll be joining the household tomorrow.

Then, the teaching her that there's no reason to be scared begins. I think I have an idea of how to proceed, but any pointers are more than welcome.

Congratulations!
About the only thing I can advise on the fear issue is stuff I'm sure you already know. Be calm and matter of fact, don't coddle her when she's fearful, don't force her to do things before she's ready, etc. Basically, don't give her any legitimate reason to be fearful, and don't reward her fear responses.

Jazzy has most excellent ears! I love her worried little forehead wrinkles, too. She's a cutie.
