Hello,
Im worried about my dog. earlier this year we cut down a few trees in our yard that my dog used as shade during the summer. Now that it's gone the only cool area my dog can hang out is under the car and it doesn't seem to be a very good place because its only going to get hotter from now til october. There is a cooler place but my dog never goes there. Bringing the dog inside isn't really an option because my mom won't allow it. Any suggestions on keeping my dog cool? Im thinking about making some kind of mini gazebo but I've never made anything before. I have alot of free time right now so i guess I can slap something together for now. Thanks for any suggestions.

Too bad about the trees! They do provide the best kind of shade, and it is important for your dog to have a shady place when it's hot.

What about building some kind of awning to make shade for your dog? Or a large beach umbrella?
Another option, if your folks will allow it, is a hard plastic kiddie pool that you keep full of water for your dog to lie in or at least jump in to get him/her cool. You'll need to change the water every few days, depending on how dirty it gets, but you can siphon it off with a hose and aim it at a part of the yard that needs water.

What kind of dog do you have? long or short hair?

In any case, make sure that you dog has plenty of fresh water.

I moved into my house and it has no trees, nothing in the back yard. I have planted a few but it is going to take a long time for them to grow.

Untill then i let At have access to the garage when my car is not in there (he loves eating the mirrors off it) i hose down the kennel to cool it off and i have a pool i let him use (supervised because he loves chewing plastic) i also either leave my large umbrella out for him, or nail a bit of shade cloth up.

Yep, a simple awning can do wonders. I have used the kind of tarp (bought at good old Wal-Mart or K-Mart) that has one metallic reflective side. The reflective side faces out, and it's amazing how much cooler it is under there. It can go over a decent size table... like an old card table. I made a frame to hold it out to make a fairly large shaded area... also protected against rain, but not wet ground.

Mine was on the patio, against the house, and on the table top, I stacked a few cement blocks so the whole thing wouldn't go sailing in the wind. I found the card table at the Salvation Army store, I think... this was years ago. I made a raised platform of pieces of 2x4 for lifts and plywood on top, and nailed down a piece of synthetic sheepskin for comfort (he'd have dragged it into the yard...).
I put his water dish under there where it was shaded for most of the day, and filled it with ice cubes and water 2-3 times a day. To encourage him to go under the "tent", I tossed a Kong filled with peanut butter or cheese or other soft goodies, every day.

This was a dog that I was keeping for friends for a month while they moved and got settled... a yard dog... big ol' hound. Once he discovered how cool it was in his palace, he could usually be found there. His dog house from the old house was too large to haul around to my place and then to their new place... so it had gone with the rest of their stuff... on a flat bed trailer, no less. My terriers realized a good thing and were often under there with Puffer. I left it up for the rest of the summer after Puffer left

Why won't he go to the cooler place? What is it?
I'm also wondering what the shelter is for the dog during bad weather? Where does he sleep? If you are planning for or have a dog house for him, it will stay cooler if it is shaded also. For example, tents often have another cover over them. The air movement between the awning and roof cools the roof a bit. Same holds true for a dog house that is shaded. Most importantly is a supply of fresh, cool water.

its next to the garage and there is a small awning beside it. I think he doesn't like it because you can't see the street from there.

We have a dog house but its small and can build up heat pretty quickly. Now my parents are away and he's chilling out inside but im gonna build something for the outside too...

thanks for the tips! My dog is a mixed breed. I think its part lab part german shepard and has short-medium length hair. kinda like a lab but a bit shorter. I think the umbrella idea is good I'll see if they sell them at target.
