Dispite some coments you have seen from others in this news group Iggs make wonderfull pets

I just meant they would make a bad pet for someone like me. And I think they're not good for most people either because of all the care they need and their enormous size. -Rubystars

I dont think they make wonderful pets even with people with yours of exp. Im starting again with a young Iguana i have taken in as a Iglet, because i have so many i cant give it 1-1 and its a evil little ***. Now it most likley always will be.
I had talked to two different iguana owners beforehand, and ... with their tail if you makethem mad / startle them.

Iguanas are large, powerful lizards. They are made to climb. Unlike primates, which climb by grabbing onto branches, iguanas climb ... they are usually shallow. Again, clothing helps, in the form of long sleeved shirts, jackets, or sweaters in this case.

I need to wear 2 thick jumpers when i take them out(in summer!) or a leather, een thats with clipped claws. Doesnt protect my neck tho
If you approach a frightened iguana, it will, as you mentioned, hit you with its tail as it tries to ... can leave cuts and welts with their tail, which is something like a combination between a club and a whip.

Worst pain the in the world, a bite wasnt too bad, every time the serated teeth almost went to the bone, nasty wounds
If you grab a terrified iguana, it will likely try to defend itself by biting you. They have sharp teeth, ... since even the tamest iguana can turn into a fighting terror. Tame females, at least, can usually be trusted. Luke

None of my males have ever done that, but yes thats what i have heard, mine go orange but never more aggressive, even when i app the females with each male.
Havent most people bought on impulse? it does seem that the shop person aid they were good pets etc, thats wrong for a start, im not sure if they even said they grew to 6 foot, thats the main reason i rescue them, as people dont know, and the fact a untamed Ig is a aggressive animal that needs exp and lots of clothing, even then your still at risk.
I'm almost afraid to ask (and Rubystars, can you respond ... - the damage they do to each other orsomething else?

A tamed iguana requires working every single day with the lizard to firsttame it and then to keep it tame. ... in. I seem to remember the walls being completely trashed.Maybe you could post that again in the binaries group? -Z

Yes, i will look for the pics, if not take some more, wallpaper ripped off, shreds on curtains and a 2 year effort replica model car turned into 100 peices and beyond repair.
Also NEVER app a Ig from above, do it at face level, as it will think your a bird predetor as happens in the wild and attack or flew

BTW how big is a 30 gal tank?
if you can return them, im not trying to make them sound bad, but im thinking of you and your kids, get a Bearded Dragon, maybe 2, certain gex.

I get offerd male Igs weekly, i cant as i have no where to put them, and thats with a large Ig room, the male would slice n dice anthing i put in.

Julie, do you get the binary animals newsgroup? if so i will scan some pics, a few are local press cuttings of me at shows with rescue Igs etc, the tame ones anyway, i have never really seen a Ig that is 100% tame thats under a year of trying.
Sorry Julian but I can't agree they may not be the easyest to make freinds with but with a little time and trustand I didn'tstart off with years of experiance.. I got my first igg 12 years ago knowing nothing about them all of the family handled and fed it every dayand within a few monthes we had gained its trust it never used its tail at us after that and I was only bitten twice in 11 years and both timesd was my fault once I reached for it when it was realy mad about something and had allready given me several warning hisses the other time I startled it when it was sleeping both were only small row of pin size hole that blead for only a minute and were not even visible the next day Ive heard worse storys from freinds with a pet dog.

( YOU HAVE TO HANDLE THEM EVERY DAY) my second one was not a hatchling like my first one and had been in a cage with a bunch of other iggs for probably 9 monthes was much more of a chalenge ( had learned how to use its tail) took a little longer to gain its trust but at just shy of a year living here it is allready comfortable with sleeping next to me under the sheets on my bed ( If you don't give them enough space to live in they will never have a good disposition)

I hope for you (for your parts exposed to the ig under the sheets, uhm) that your ig never has nightmares. Emotion: smile

Thank you all for some excellent advice, insight, and suggestions! I've showed them the web page with pictures of ... the time to help me with this! I'll bere-reading the posts and more fully checking out the links! Sincerely, ~Julie

Forgot to say, i dont think you could ever tame 3 or even 1 Ig kept together, the other 2 would see the first go scatty and automaticly do the same, i have v tame Igs with non tame and the non tame dont realise im a source for food, walks etc and are still nasty.

I got my first Ig pre interet and i couldnt find a book, i didnt know what to feed them as someone dumped it on me, i have passed thru may Igs, 1 adult nasty as hell when i got it, i still have the scars on my fingers where it bit to the bone, but is now safe to be stroked my children etc, doesnt have any fear or wish to attack, i have a adult female that was docile from day one, i have 2 now that are nasty, one so much it goes crazy if i go withing
5 foot of it, and i have had that one for well over a year now, no 2 Igs arethe same, i have seen Igs that never tame.
A tame Ig a better pet, a wild nasty one is a pain to keep, i get attacked when i try to clean mine out, it really should be tame for its own good.

Would you take on 3 Igs at once? 1 takes time, 3 i wouldnt.
thing

Buy a candy bar on impuse, buy a bobblehead on impulse, but an ANIMAL?

With access to the internet there's no excuse for not knowing.
and the fact a untamed Ig is a aggressive animal that needs exp and lots of clothing, even then your still at risk.

Things that people should find out first.
