What steps should I take to find the best breeder for my next Doberman? My first dobe, named Wes, died at 4 years of age due to cardio. I would like to lower my risk of having this happen again if at all possible. I'm not looking per say to have a show dog, but would like him to be sound, and good temper. Obedience and agility will be in his future agenda and mine. Are there breeders out there that have the parents and maybe even the grand parents checked for cardio prior to breeding? Does this lessen the risk of a pup having health issues? I'm in Michigan, but would consider out of state too.

My searches with Google News Groups show some responses to this type of question, but I did not find anything of resent.

Thanks,
Eric D

I can thoroughly recommend this lady to help you though she might not have any puppies available.
She takes part in the Holter Project etc.

Here's a link to the DPCA's Longevity program:

Longevity is one great marker of genetic health. A good Doberman breeder should have their dogs screened for cardio yearly, but as you've found out, it's a disease which can strike with little to no warning.

If you want to do obedience and agility, you might look toward some of the breeders who mix show with working lines (usually with some European bloodlines). I can't recommend a specific breeder, but there are several groups out there. Look for udcmember on yahoogroups and to subscribe to cyberdobes, go to http://www.cyberdobes.com
Thanks for the suggestions and the excellent links at the suggested sites. I have been doing a lot of reading. I would like to do something soon however, I am willing to wait in order to make a better choice.
Thanks again for your help,
Eric D
