There have been a lot of discussions and arguing about it as there are many dog attacks involving this breed. What's your own opinion? Do you think the Pitt Bull is a dangerous dog breed?

Some statistics from Wikipedia : The following table summarizes the number of pit bull-related fatalities in the United States from 2006-2008 as reported by news organizations.

YearTotal DeathsDeaths (percentage) involving pit bull-type dogs
20063016 (53%)
20073520 (57%)
20082316 (65%)
Pitbulls and pitbull types are banned in the UK but I have this to say...

What a load of tosh!! There is no dangerous dog only dangerous owners who train their dog to be aggressive!!

Of course there are some rare exceptions. No matter how well you train a dog and socialise it it could be aggressive but in general it is the owners at fault, not the dog.

Blame the deed and not the breed!
Well said, Sarah.
I've never owned a pitbull so I cannot share my own experience, but just want to share my guess. I guess some dog breeds are more agressive than others, right? So, perhaps pitbulls are the ones more aggressive, and hence you have to train them really hard so they become well socialized and obedient. As you've said, some owners neglect this necessity and thus their dog can behave too aggressively. Which makes other people think that pitbulls are way too dangerous.

I know a few people with pitbulls. They've brought them up properly and they are wonderful family pets. These breeds are definitely not for a novice owner and not for an owner who is only used to the smaller breeds.

Socialisation with these types of dogs is necessary. Fighting is in their blood and if untrained their aggression comes through which can be hard to get rid of. Some people would say (ok definitely say) I own 2 aggressive breeds. The German Shepherd and Mastiff. My mastiff pup is 3 months old and I can tell she is going to be a handful. She's dog aggressive but it's something that can easily be cured/controlled by a lot of socialisation and praise/treat reward training.

Sadly the people who get these types of dogs are usually yobs; They want these dogs as a status symbol and will often encourage their dog to be aggressive. It's so sad to see a wonderful breed ruined by these people and it angers me.
my exposure to pit bulls is that most of my family has or had pit bulls all my life I am 50 these dogs were all raised with other breeds of dogs such as my moms 3 taco dogs1cockapoo my bull mastiff ,1 pitt my cousins 1 English bull 3 pit bulls and 2 brothers with golden lab ,black lab and taco dog when ever we go to each others house we are expected to bring our animals with. and in all those years most of the trouble is from the taco dogs going after other dogs and people. these are the dogs we have now there have bean several other breeds and pitts through the years and I will say socializing your dog works their are a lot of dogs at our get together's because our family friends bring thier pets to also most of us have cats to that interact with our dogs my pitt raised my cat from a rescued kitten a friend brought us
