DD's iguana (3 months old) escaped yesterday outside. We searched for six hours and I've put food out to try to bring him back. Still looking. I believe in hoping for the best, preparing for the worst, so I'm looking at possible replacements. We didn't know how big iguana's get before we bought him (shame on me for not researching - I know - it was an impulse purchase). So I've told DD I'd like to find a lizard that will stay a bit smaller than an iguana. If Spike does come back, we will of course welcome him with open arms. I have no problems keeping him his entire life and dedicating our laundry room to him. But knowing in advance how big they get, I don't plan to get another one.
Can anyone suggest a good smaller (up to 2 feet) lizard that likes to be handled and is diurnal?
So far I'm considering and researching Blue Tongued Skinks, Bearded Dragons and Day Geckos.
I'd like something that won't cost a fortune to buy. Spike was only $15. We already have the set up, so upkeep cost isn't a problem. But looking online and finding lizards selling for several hundred dollars has got me wondering how much they go for around here! I'm off to pet stores today just to see what they have and how much they cost. Taking pictures while there so I'll be able to come home, make sure they are what the store says they are and look up how to care for them.
TIA
Kim
The only way i found my igs when escpaced out was, get up jsut before sun comes up and sit with a good view looking for movement in trees and bushes, anything that catches the eye. i looked for the igs but when there still you cant see them, even if they are above you, i found that out. got all mine back after a few weeks 2 summers ago. I found early morning one they woke and started gettting ready to bask was the best time

i coverd the greenhouse in mesh should they smash thru, they did, in the only tiny square where i had ran out of mesh.

Before you consider replacements, devote some mental energy to determining how the pet got out, and what you can do better next time to ensure it doesn't recur.
We all make mistakes, but these lapses are good occasions to consider how we can do better by our little buddies.

Put "lost iguana" posters up around your neighbourhood. Someone may have caught Spike
Oh thanks! I didn't think he would be moving that early because it's still cool in the mornings here. I thought he had to warm up before he could move about well. Tomorrow morning I'll get up really early and try looking for him again - I dreamed last night that we caught him just before bedtime! Kim

I know just how he got out! I've got that part covered very well. We got a new cage and although I watched him nosing around trying to find a way out for over an hour, once I went inside, he must have found a larger hole that I didn't see. I'll be covering the cage with a smaller mesh before I use it again.

I've alerted all the neighbors already Emotion: smile
My next door neighbor has a group of lizards that comes to her house daily. We were hoping Spike might be found with them, but so far no luck. (he's still very young so I hoped he would be following the "safety in numbers" rule of young iguanas)
