Schedule food and outings. Confine safely when unsupervised. Supervise whenever not confined. Puppy pads give permission for a puppy to eliminate indoors. Unless there is a special circumstance, most people don't want that.

We hung a bell on our back door & rang it and opened the door. After that, our pup learned that when the bell rang the door opened. Of course that was after taking her out every 2 hours 24/7 for a few weeks.
Once she saw the "magic" of the bell, we had no more "accidents". Now we have a doggy door & the bell means she wants us to go out with her. At least we have a choice. : )
Didn't get much sleep during that time, but didn't have to clean up many messes either.
Now that she is over a year, I can't remember when she had an accident (at least 8 or 9 mos ago).
The larger breeds seem to be easier to "house train" than the smaller ones.
Lots of praise when they go, no yelling when they mess, and absolutely no nose rubbing. Just clean it up, use an enzyme cleaner & pretend it never happened. Soon, it will all be OK.
Good Luck
