My umbrella is an old "rescue" male. He's probably over 30 years old though I really don't know. Appears to be in good health. He dislikes humans and though he doesn't attack he will not allow himself to be touched by a human. He'll take food from fingers if he's hungry without biting. He gets along well with my B&G macaws including some mutual grooming. He can fly ok when he wants to though he mostly just sits and watches the world go by. He's never caged. He's very quiet for a U2, rarely making any noise, though his voice is a loud and awful as any U2 when he uses it.
I can't help you on "training". I've had no luck even making friends with the one that lives with me. I suspect he's had repeated bad experiences with humans in the past. As for care he just gets a good varied diet of fruits, vegetables, and nuts. He doesn't like to be watched when he's eating, and will quit if a human is present.

I have one. She is a 2nd hand 13 year old hen. She is extremely demading and bloody ear splitting when she wants attention. I cannot reust her with my other birds. She makes a hug emess with her feather dust which leaves a white imprint of her body on any dark clothes I wear while cuddling her.Other than that, I suggest you try www.mytoos.com I have a feeling that an awful lot of these birds get passed on from home to home, eding up progressively more unhappy and distrustful and perhaps ending up like Loius's

I've had him since he was hatched, and he's very attached to me. Doesn't like my husband very much and overnight guests make him scream like crazy. He has a nice vocabulary and loves to sing... he doesn't like new foods and vegetables make him mad... but he does love most fruit! the mytoos site that people point you to is a very informative one. If you ever just want to chat about your bird.. I'm happy to talk with you.

I have had mine (female) for almost a year. I am a single mother who has returned to college and I'm feeling a little guilty because she isn't getting the attention she once had. She is pretty good, usually she has one screaming session an evening. How much time do bird owners usually have to devote to a bird such as this one? I understand that alot of this breed change owners quite often and I really love her and would never part with her, but again I just feel guilty.
