Well, she's not going to make her 20th birthday. We're looking at days or very few weeks, not months. The mass on her spleen is so large that she's got some intestinal blockage from pressure. It's just a question whether I'll have to put her down because she can't eat before the mass bursts and kills her.
All things considered, I'm grateful. She's in no pain and is as active as ever. I've cancelled everything I could so that we can spend all remaining time together and she's swimming hours every day. It isn't horrible at all and a large-breed 19 yr old dog is actually pretty lucky to have hermangio as a cause of death - none of that lingering, wasting, painful stuff.

Oh Lynn, I'm so sorry to hear about Rafiki's big ole mass and her imminent passing. I've always enjoyed hearing about her. Rafiki's a good strong *** who eats nails for breakfast and doesn't put up with crap. Whatta personality, in some ways she reminds me of Zeffie. It's a testament to her toughness but more importantly to your love and care that she's lived such a long and fulfilling life.
BTW, what does "Rafiki" mean? If I ever get another smart, determined, rock-steady, yet with no sense of humor what-so-ever, smooth collie *** (i.e., a reincarnation of Zeffie), I think Rafiki would be a good potential name.
Take care and give ole Rafiki a scritch for me,
Chris and her smoothies,
Pablo and Lucy (who is proving to be smart, eager and steady but with a flirty kittenish personality)
All things considered, I'm grateful.

All things considered, I'm sure
Rafiki is very grateful, too. What
a wonderful long life!
I know it doesn't make the pain
of prospective any less right now.
And for that, I'm truly sorry.

Ah, even so, even so, it's still hard to lose a friend. 19 years? You must be doing something right.

If we could all be blessed with almost 20 years of our heart dog's life. Tearful congratulations Lynn.

Rafiki is Swahili for "friend". I didn't name her, but it certainly fits. I don't know the Swahili for "alter-ego" or " of the West" -) But there's a catch to using the name. You must sing Van Morrison's "Brown-eyed Girl" to any dogs named Rafiki. It's a rule.

i'm sorry. she's had a long, meaningful life, but i know that doesn't make it any easier for you.

How lucky you are to have the time to say goodbye. And you can remind yourself that she doesn't know. You've been so fortunate to have her for such a long time - not that you don't want it to be that long all over again now. It's never enough.
Thought are with you.

I am so sorry. Rafiki has had a good long life. It is never enough for us left behind. It should give you peace that she is not in pain, nor aware that she has an illness. You have time to treat her with all the special things she enjoys doing.
