If you do it make sure you treat the rats humanely.

We have added several rats to our feeder room population, but have not had them long enough to really form an opinion as to whether its "worth it", at least in cash terms. I'll say this much: They are WAY preferable to the mouse and hamster colonies we keep since (a) mice just stink no matter what and (b) hamsters can be friggin' MEAN. The rats are by far the most personable feeders, but lose out in cute factor to the button quail and other chicks. I really am starting to LIKE the adult rat breeders we have, a bit more than is prudent...

ya breed anything and watch the babies grow up and you fall for em. rats are awesome pets. a plus about breeding and raising your own is u control what goes into them. you feed them only the best foods so the reptiles ur feeding them too get all the right nutrition.
ive yet to find a petstore that takes good care of their rodents. most ive seen offer hamster/gerbil food to the rats and that isnt a good food for rats. as far as being cheaper, you hve to add up the cost of aspen bedding, cages, waterbottles, and the food for the rodents.

You must not be visiting Petcos then, 'cause all rats and mice at petcos are to be fed lab blocks.

there are no petcos around, the nearest petco is like almost 2 hours away. what kind of lab blocks tho? the ones that are made mostly of corn are bad for rats.

No way could I breed rats as feeders having owned several as pets. They have to be among the most intelligent pets I have ever owned, topped (possibly) by my dogs and horses.

Rats need a varied diet and will eat almost anything. My babes favoured pasta, cheese and chocolate, but only received it in small doses aside their stable diet.

I'll look next time I go although I believe I've seen dishes of seeds and nuts, but I CAN say for sure that my local Petco does not SELL lab blocks.
