How do your dogs react differently when you (or your significant other) are out of town??
When I am out of town, Moogli gets much more reactive and protective of Genevieve. He is much more alert at night and reacts to sounds much quicker.
Here is a message that I sent to some other friends today describing it.

As most of you know, Moogli sleeps in bed with Gen and I. Usually at our feet, but he will sneak in between us (stealing all the covers while doing so) if he has a chance. He is also pretty quiet at night. On average, once every 2 or 3 weeks, he will wke up, decide that people outside the apartment are making toomuch noise, and will bark at them.

While I was away, according to Gen. He barked more often. At least 3 or 4 times a night. And not the simply whuffs/soft barks/growls he does when I am around. Full throated barks. And when he wasn't barking, he would be standing on the corner of the bed, staring out the bedroom door, waiting for something EEVIILL to come through the door.

I was gone Moonday night, Tuesday night, and Wednesday night. All three nights he barked like a fool. Thursday night, I got back, and he slept the sleep of the righteous.

Well, yea! When you're not home, he's the Man of the House. :}

Hah, Marcel! Moogli thinks he is ALL THAT and a bag of pork rinds. Pretty cute that he doesnt' realize Gen is far more capable of protecting him than vice versa.
I have been doing quite a bit of travelling for work lately. Kavik sleeps in my spot on the bed when I am gone and Toklat, who only lies on the bed with me (and never when mike is on there by himself) will even lie next to mike if I am out of time. No idea if they are missing me or if my spot on the bed seems valuable.

Exactly like that. Normally, Coda is one to alert to noises outside. However, when John is gone, both dogs are much more "on guard" and alert to many more noises.
And, last year, Bodhi also slept a good portion of the time on the bed. He usually sleeps on the floor, on my side of the bed, on his cushions. Coda nearly always sleeps on the bed, sprawled across the foot of the bed, head on my legs, his legs up in the air. Or, he'll squeeze his 60+lb body up inbetween us. I just have to watch out, because once in awhile our Little cat likes to sleep under the covers, against my stomach. I don't want Coda to smoosh her.
John will be leaving on a trip here in about a month, and will be gone for nearly 2 weeks. With my two beasts, I feel pretty safe. :-) Shelly & The Beastie Boys
Mike works nights right now so my two think they have to be overly protective when he's not home.
I don't dare have the downstairs windows open or Brandy parks her butt right in front of the radiator just waiting for the slightest reason to jump up on it and bark the "I'm going to kill you bark if you come up on my porch bark" If I want peace and quite I close the windows and still have to insist she come up to bed with me.
Barney is the 24/7 I'm going to kill you dog if you hurt my mom. If I'm home and he hears something out of the ordinary he barks. Now there isn't a peep out of him if I'm not here. Mike says "Yea Barney I know who you love more cause when mom's not home you are quiet as a mouse" I pretty much don't worry if Barney barks because he yaps at everything. Now if Brandy starts growling or barks at night I'm wide awake to find out what's going on.

Howdy All,
When I had only Chime I had to leave for 3 days my mother said Chime was not very enthused about things and on the third day she didn't eat. When I got home later that night Chime greeted me but in Saluki style just wandered away looking for dinner.

All 3 do much the same as Moogli, whether it's me or my husband that's gone. They're on hyper-alert/protect mode the whole time although, they're a little bit more so when it's Paul that's gone.I get less sleep when he's gone not necessarily because he's not here, but because of the extra woofs, barks and radar ear tuning for potentially deadly leaves that may bang against the doors or windows like claps of thunder.

For that you need Twinkies and lunch meat. Eternity through preservatives.

In the odd chance that I'm going somewhere, and the dogs & my husband are home, one of mine will park himself on the porch and wait. I've actually never left overnight without my husband AND without Bodhi at the same time. Usually if I'm gone overnight, it's because I've gone somewhere with Bodhi (to a show or match).
