YAY!!! My rubber boa ate his first offered meal today. Took me a while to get pinkies tiny enough for him! I tried the technique as instructed by the man who donated the snake to me:
Insert a brightly colored shallow container into the rubber boa's enclosure with a pinky inside... replace lid, leave alone. I used a red Jelly Bellies tin.
This was the snake's first frozen/thawed meal, he didn't even take 10 seconds to find it! Even though I chose the teensiest pinky I could get, it still left a noticeable lump in his belly. Hee! He's skinnier than my pinky finger, and a year and a half old! o 0
I'm going to work as a traumatized kittycat today... bright eyed, bushy tailed, and hair standing on end. Happy Halloween! Emotion: smile

In other news, I FINALLY assembled my heat tape I bought from www.beanfarm.com... awesome stuff. My metal shelves are now heated all along one side. I didn't want to assemble dimmer boxes too, so I bought lamp dimmers from Wal-Mart. Absolutely required as the heat tape can exceed 125F on its own! My total investment in supplies was $40 and I made 3 separate heat tape heaters, One 4 feet long and two 3 feet long. What a steal!

Glad to hear your Rubber Boa is doing well fr0glet! The little black & white Kenyan Sand Boa I got a while back is growing like wildfire! I had trouble finding pinkies small enough for him to begin with too. But now he's eating nearly full grown mice! I've never been one to feed anything out of my hand, but this little guy is soo funny! He reminds me of a "Grabboid" from the Tremors movies! I take a pre-killed mouse & lightly drag it around over the aspen substrate..immediately a little head pops up somewhere in the tank.

All it takes after that is dragging the mouse by the "Grabboid's" head, and WHAM! He explodes out of the aspen, grabbing & wrapping the mouse. You can pick the mouse up out of the tank with the snake attached, like a bunch of grapes..lol. Kinda reminds me of one of those "never give up" cartoons..lol.

sounds like how I feed my rosies. They will not eat in separate containers, so I drag the prey item around, making sure no substrate gets picked up by it, let them grab it, THEN move them to a different container while they are keeping themselves busy squeezing the already-dead mouse. Emotion: smile

works great so far!

Huh. Too bad I didn't know that before I moved to TX, I'd have sent mine to you last spring. Been thinking of trading it off for awhile. I'm tired of snakes I never see! Now it's awfully cold up north to ship.
