i actually have to use a metal buckle on Lola, Manu chews the plastic buckles off her collars as they play.

When Franklin was a puppy, he would chew through Lucy's collars. She'd stand there while he knawed away. She stopped wearing one for a bit, or it was lace with bitter apple.
never had one rust, but it may depend on the type of water... salt, fresh, hard, soft, mineral content, etc...

I was wondering where these dogs are swimming! Mine are generally in fresh water, but chlorinated at times (shh - don't tell the husband) and salt as well.

I have an old buckle collar that has been sitting outside for the past 4 years, getting snowed and rained on. It is hooked to the line that I use when Khan wants to sit outside the front door, which he only does when it is too damn cold for humans to be out there for any length of time. It doesn't look like much for sure, but the metal part hasn't really rusted much at all.

I've tried plastic too but the one's I've used won't ... hot air balloons a couple of times and ran off.

When walking on leash? I don't attach leashes to buckle or buckle type collars.

No, she was not on a leash when she ran off. I use a nylon training collar on this particular dog when on a leash.
I use a martingale or slip collar for the leash. ID on
the collar is no good if the collar comes off the dog in a moment of panic. I want to make sure a panicking dog can't back out of a collar.

Even with the plastic the D-Ring for the license corrodes.

Weird. I have never had that happen and my dogs have been swimming since 1973 (not continuously! ;-D). They don't ... maybe your tag ring is rubbing the finish off the d-ring? Mine where ID wallets that slide on their collars.

From what I understand they are supposed to have their licence in plain view in my county but the ID wallet sounds interesting. I have the license on the D-Ring so it can't fall off and attached at the bottom with a rivet or cable tie so it doesn't jangle.
