People whose kids are nearing high-school graduation age often ask me to mentor them on career choices. If they indicate ... damn good one, particularly in extreme climates. The 'rents don't always like my being brutally honest with their kids. Shrug.

It bothers me that so many people tend to think that blue collar is bad in some way. As long as they are doing something beneficial to society that supports them and whatever people or animals they have taken responsibility for and is not illegal or immoral, I don't care what my kids end up doing for a living. It would be really great to get discounted air conditioning service, so I certainly wouldn't complain about that choice.

We absolutely ADORE the plumber, the electrician, and our HVAC guy, who has been a friend of DH's for over 30 years. I was particularly comforted today, when the boiler decided to cook me, that I could call Paul up, explain the problem and he would tell me everything I needed to know.
The electrician is in Goldens & is involved in rescue (and occasionally breeds).
The plumber is a character, a very sweet and accomplished man.

I trust each of them completely, they have never tried to be anything but kind, truthful and fair. I recommend them frequently, but only to sane people.
We have a 1929 home & and 1893 double. Think we depend on these men? Think we honor them? You bet. They are the most trustworthy professionals we know.

Gen, who is a teacher, sometimes gets funny looks from her students when she explains that, in the job market these days in Ottawa, a plumber, electrician or bricklayer can probably make just as much money as a doctor, with much better hours.

Those professions are no more immune to Sturgeon's Law than any other. It took a heck of a long time to find competent tradespeople. I cherish the ones I've found but in the interim I had to deal with idiots like Bob the Plumber, who managed to destroy all of the furniture in my downstairs bathroom and despite being an older gentleman with presumably long experience, still hadn't figured out that water (and other, uh, stuff) flow downhill.

doG knows there've been several times over the past few years or so when I found occasion to wish I had some non-engineering skills beyond cooking, tending bar and waiting tables.

I worked with some kids whose dad was an avocado picker who had been murdered. When the six year old's teacher was talking about what they wanted to be when they grew up, the little boy said he wanted to pick avocados. The teacher showed her dismay on her face and told him he could do much better than that. When he told me this story, I told him that she probably meant that other jobs pay more money, but of course avocado picking is a good job because his dad was a good man and he was an avocado picker.

That got out into the open what had upset him. I told the teacher privately to think about rephrasing the lessons on the importance of education because she had told a little boy who was grieving his father's death that his dad was a loser, even though she hadn't meant to hurt him at all and was horrified when she realized that is how it had come out. This same boy and his brother later started "working" with a friend's father who would take them along sometimes when he did handyman work. They told me that they were going to put in a jacuzzi for me when they grew up to be handymen. I told them that was great but to make sure they paid attention in reading so they could follow the directions and in math so they could set it up right because I didn't want a funky looking jacuzzi that didn't work right.

The teacher reported that they applied themselves to their school work much more after that discussion. I always connect school to their current goals and dreams, not to my goals or dreams. I also remind them that if they have a good education, they have more options so that if they find they want to do something else after high school or even when they are old like me, they can do whatever they want. But if they don't do well in school and learn good work habits and the ability to deal with authority figures and peers, they will be stuck with a lot fewer options.

When I was an attorney, most of the people I knew in the profession hated their jobs in addition to worrying about job security. Yet they couldn't even work the fax machine by themselves so they had no other job options. Sometimes advanced education is a hindrance!

My advice to people asking if they should go into law was that if you really enjoy it, do it. But don't do it for any other reason. At least then you have personal satisfaction to fall back on.

that's what Maui does. He's a toy poodle so he can't reach the counter but he can go from the floor to the chair to the table and then to the counter!

Well, I certainly found cooking and tending bar satisfying, but I never got to the point where I was considering returning to either. Somehow the right employer and I hooked up after a few months. The only problem is that two of those three employers have closed their doors and turned out the lights - and the third, while challenging and satisfying, just doesn't FEEL right somehow. (And I have a 60-mile daily commute!)
Looking at the longer term, I'm seeing senior engineering being mostly either contracted or offshored. I think if I can hold it together for a few more years I can at least stay current enough to make contract work a possibility - either that, or (depending on my financial situation) go into teaching. Or back behind the bar. Emotion: smile
