Well I wrote back in May that I had bought a small slider and wanted imput...(which I learned is a very bad thing!!) well I'm back for more advice. :-)
My friend bought a turtle at the same time roughly the same size... Now, almost 6 months later hers is about 3 times the size of mine... in fact mine has hardly grown at all, he still is under 2 inches across while hers is 5 or 6!!
Hers is in a smaller tank.. the water might be a few degrees warmer than mine... I keep mine in the mid 70's... its in the low 80's under the heat lamp, although he usually stays on the shelf without the lamp!
I feed the little guy 2 or three small crickets every day... and 2 or
3 meal worms... he still won't eat the little dried pellets... infact he is quite picky... canned crickets are a big no-no, only live will do...but the canned meal worms are fine and once every couple of weeks he also will eat a canned catapiller... there are plants in the tank, which he doesn't nibble on... and I have tried various fruits and veggies which I have to dig out untouched a day or so later.. My question is ... why the huge difference in size??? My friend thinks maybe she has a female and mine might be a male... could it be that simple???
Thanks for any imput!

LOL after I posted this I came back to read it again... and realized that it just didn't sound right... I meant that I learned that buying a turtle that small, was a bad thing.. not asking for advice!! Advice is a good thing... (hiding my very red face and going to hide!! *BG*)

What does your friend feed hers?

Well I posted a reply but it never showed up... hmmm... anyway my friend feeds her turtle 2 or 3 canned crickets and a few of the dried pellets...
Oh and hers lives in a 10 gal. tank.. (which is she is upgrading in the next week or so... since its kinda outgrown it...) and mine lives in a 40 gal. breeder tank..

Have you had yours checked for parasites?
Water temp can make a big difference. Mid to upper 70s is fine. Much warmer and the turtle will grow faster, but may have deformities (I've especially noticed them around the lower jaw) as a result.
The amount of food that you mentioned - is that all you offer, or is that all it eats?
Another possibility - my mom kept my sister and I at the same temp and fed us both the same foods. My sister is still much shorter than I.

Turtles will also eat raw meat, raw fish, smoked salmon, cooked prawns, raw prawns
In the wild they've been known to take ducklings. Red-eared sliders are a problem in the UK, people released little baby turtles and now big monster sliders have been seen attacking wild fowl and they're leaving a dent in the fish population

Maybe your mom shouldn't have brumated her.
