First off, quit calling your dog your "son". It makes you look like a looney. Every single person here is passionate about their animals and calling a dog a dog in no way diminishes that relationship.

Let's summarize here...
Your dog attacked your neighbor's cat.
The attack went on for 5 to 10 minutes, in your presence, and you were unable to stop it.
And now you want to know how to beat the rap.
Vicious is as vicious does. What if it had been a child? An actual human child?

Oh, please. A dog attacking a cat is prey drive. The fact that a dog attacks and even kills a dog does not make it vicious, nor does it mean the dog is going to attack human children.

That should be, attacks and even kills a cat.

And if it had been a small dog, say a toy poodle? Would that make it vicious?
I'm no expert by any means, but, if a dog is uncontrolled, and will not let off and
attacks and harms any animal or human ,Especially in the presence of it's owner ,that Dog is vicious.
A dog that is not controllable, often does harm other animals. He should never be allowed to do so again.
Dogs are not people. They don't want to be our children. This is coming from an admitted dog parent(myself) who firmly believes dogs need training, and that we as humans MUST have proper control of our pets at all times.Otherwise, we give up the privilege of having pets. Which is sad for the animal, who at best will live kenneled or crated with minimal interaction and socializations.YMMV

No, that wouldn't make it vicious. In most cases, when a dog attacks a cat or small dog, it's due to prey drive. That means it needs to be supervised carefully so that it cannot harm small animals. But it doesn't mean the dog is vicious or will bite children or adult humans.

My definition of vicious differs from yours. I've known lots of very nice dogs that would harm small animals but would not dream of harming humans.

Um, okay. I don't recall saying that dogs should be allowed to run loose and harm other animals. Certainly, I don't think they should.

I'm quite aware that dogs are not people, which is why I don't refer to myself as a dog parent. You apparently have interpreted my statement that going after a cat is due to prey drive and doesn't equate to viciousness or human aggression to mean that I think dogs don't need training and/or don't need to be controlled. That's not what I believe, nor have I ever said such things.

And, in fact, "harming small animals" is specifically what many breeds were created for.

That's true. Examples would be several dogs living in my home, although they do not attempt to harm my indoor cats.

I live with three of them. I've lived with 2 others.
