The term for female sterilization is "spayed," and a call to her previous vet is all that is necessary. If she was spayed it will be in her records. If she wasn't, she certainly could have gone into heat by now.

Even though her previous owners had not had Nemo spayed, they were "sure" she hadn't gone into heat. She was three years old when we took her in. And pregnant. And a week away from delivering puppies that the vet thought she wasn't carrying.
If you are going to take her in, yes, call the previous vet. If there was none, you need to get her to a vet for the aforementioned progesterone test, but it's likely that if she's 9-10 months old, that nobody has bothered to spay her.
She's going to need vet information anyway: is she on heartworm medication? Has she had her rabies/distemper shots?

Nemo's spay scar is a tiny little "y" shaped incision on her belly.

Some dogs are better at hiding estrus symptoms than others. Nemo was pretty good at it. We don't have to worry about that anymore.
