Day after Christmas, 9 pm. Sparky made it through Christmas. Not so lucky today. He died about an hour ago. The end was peaceful. He just seemed to fall asleep.
I took him from his bed to see if he had to urinate, and I had to hold him up in the litter box. He didn't do anything. I picked him up to put him back in his bed, and while I was holding him he unrinated. I knew that was it.
I put him in the couch. During his last 1/2 hour he gasped a few times and sort of groaned. Then I noticed when I petted near his eyes there was no response and his pupils didn't react to light.

I checked his heart with a stethescope and his rate was about 100. A few minutes later it dropped to 80. It was only a matter of minutes before he was gone.
It may sound cruel or selfish, but after a week with no improvement, I felt a bit of relief. Sparky didn't suffer any, but the past week he has just slept most of time and couldn't stand.

I'm so sorry for your loss. I know you loved Sparky and took good care of him. He knew you cared about him through the very end. He was a very lucky cat.

My sympathies on your loss of Sparky. He knew he was loved and was fortunate to die at home. Sometimes we have to intervene before that point but since his end was fairly peaceful, it's best that he could go that way. I'm sure you will meet him again someday.

It is not cruel or selfish to be relieved that your cat's final moments were peaceful, at home, in your loving arms, and that you no longer have to worry about choosing a time. You obviously kept his best interest uppermost in your mind. Condolences on your loss.

I'm so sorry about Sparky, but he died in such a peaceful way, with you. You gave him a wonderful life and now he's waiting with all kinds of kitty playmates for you at the bridge. Hug to you.

Sounds anything but selfish.. My condolences on the passing of Sparky.
