We had a visitor last night. While I was making supper, a raccoon showed up on my patio. I expect he smelled food and was hoping for a hand-out. It wasn't dark yet, so the blinds were open, and Harriet went absolutely batshit crazy, throwing her body against the sliding door and frothing at the mouth.
The raccoon was very cute, but worrisome. He did not back away from the door, even though Harriet was doing an impressive Cujo impression. This is the first time I've seen a raccoon out that early in the evening, and the first time I've encountered one who was not at all fearful. Eeep!
After I settled Harriet, we watched him for awhile. His gait was funny, like there was something going on with his back end or maybe he had an injured leg. If he returns tonight, I'm going to call AC tomorrow, just on the off chance that he's diseased. With all the dogs and cats living here, a rabid raccoon is the last thing we need.

It's more likely to be distemper than rabies. We see a LOT of coons with distemper around here every spring.
Nonetheless, not something you want Harriet getting hold of.

I hadn't even considered distemper. Yikes!

No, no it most certainly is not.

Yes, very scary. I had one on my front deck last spring. The dogs were all going BONKERS trying to get through the door at it (lucky thing they all know Leave It, and even luckier that they all know when I REALLY, REALLY mean it!). Suckerdaddy Pat and I got out the front door, which should have been enough to scare it completely into the next block and it just sat there looking at us. At that point, I knew what was going on - about the only time we ever see coons around here is when they're sick and it's almost always distemper - so we herded it into an empty garbage can and took it to UI Vet Med.

Then we came home and scoured the garbage can and the deck with food- grade quatricide.

Hey, I remember you!

I remember you and Harriet too! We lost our newsgroup access some time back and it's only been recently that I've had the time and the inclination to try get back in.
