I have been taking care of a 14-year-old dog who belonged to an ex-GF who got flooded out of her house and had to move to a no-dogs place.
Sunday night he got splattered on the road in front of my house. Somebody in a big pickup sped up to about 65 and swerved into the oncoming lane to make the kill. Nice, eh? I had to clean up the mess with a shovel.
It was my fault for letting it happen. But I had dinner with his owner last night and we agreed that the cloud has a silver lining the dog died instantly, and now we won't have to make a hard decision down the road. He had a long, happy life and he was happy and healthy up to the moment he died.
But, I am now going to build a fence, which is what I should have done before.

I only have a small truck, but its definitely one of my cat-hunting tools.
Whatever it takes.

Did you really mean to say that?

Remember the conversation we had a few months ago about assholes who deliberately run over animals?

He's said such things before.

Vaguely, but yes. I think I said that I'd never seen anyone do that deliberately?
And lucky for me that I never have, because I'd probably be sitting in a prison cell today if I had.
And if Ball is truly serious above, then he's indeed an of truly monumental proportions.
Yes, you can quote me on that.

That must have been horribly difficult for you, awful.
Once I was coming in to my apartment with my dog (not current dog) and somehow as we were getting in I dropped the leash and the dog darted out the elevator doors as my head was turned and I was hitting the "close door" button. By the time I turned around the dog was gone, the doors were closing on the leash handle and it got trapped. I just stood there, stunned as the elevator started going up, it was a few seconds before I got it together to hit the Stop button.

By that time the dog was literally hanging from the closed elevator doors on the other side, me with no access to her. Luckily she was wearing a prong collar (a choke probably would have killed her) and a neighbour happened by at that moment - great big strong guy, he supported her (she peed all over him!) and managed to get the collar off.
I think I walked around in a daze of overwhelming guilt for about three days.
