Hello,
I am in a quandry and was wondering if anyone here has experience with these two breeds. I would like a medium dog, good with children, not protective - a "show the robber the silver" kind of dog. I like both the Standards and the Brittanys I have met, but am open to other medium-sized breeds. They both seem to have the size and intelligence I am looking for.
I would prefer to wait to get a great pup from a top-quality breeder. Our dog would be a house pet. We had a chocolate Lab for many years, so we know about high-energy sporting dogs! I'd like to get away form the hair and the size, although I loved our old Lab's temperment. I think we will have an ideal situation - I work from home, so I am home most of the time, and our kids are ages 6 and 8. Friendly, non-aggressive temperament is much more important to us than "prey drive" or show conformation, although of course we want a nice, healthy dog.
I like the Standard Poodle's non-shed coat, and I understand about the grooming commitment this dog requires. However, the Brittany seems like such an intelligent Lab-like sporting dog, whose coat does not need clipping, etc., (but does shed and require frequent brushing).

Are they both about the same in terms of exercise requirements and "barkiness"? (Less barking is better in our opinion - is that possible in a Poodle?)
I must say that there is a lot more information and potential pups in the Standard Poodle lines - Brittanys seem quite rare in my area (Ohio). But, I am willing to drive and meet and do what it takes to get the right dog for our family.
Thanks for any info,
- Lisa

I can put you in touch with a REALLY great brittany breeder (western Ohio) dogs have great temperaments. They are show stock and field trained. All health certs (husband is a veterinarian)

that pretty much eliminates the Standard Poodle. They are loyal, samrt dogs but definetly not a show the robber the silver type. They are, afer all, sometimes used as police dogs and they have the temperament appropriate for the work. Properly bred they should be stable and accepting of strangers, but not overtly friendly as a lab or golden might be.

ok, this may seem strange, but that's exactly how i'd describe my pit bulls. -)
that said, from my limited experience with these breeds, i think the Brittany fits your description better. be aware though, they are a bit higher energy than your average pet Lab. there are usually a lot of young adults in rescue, so i'd call your local Brittany rescue group and talk to them, explain your needs, and see what they have to say. i absolutely love Brittanys, and i'm hoping to have one of my own someday. there's just something so friendly about their personalities, i just love interacting with them.

Hello, I am in a quandry and was wondering if ... to have the size and intelligence I am looking for.

I own three Brittanys and of course I think they are the most wonderful creatures on earth...but yes, VERY HIGH energy...and beware of hair...a spayed/neutered pet Brit usually has TONS of fuzzy hair...I write this just as I got through grooming my six year old spayed girl..took about four pounds off of her in fuzzy undercoat; there is a lot more grooming than meets the eye, certainly more hair to deal with than a Lab (in general; all shed). But are they worth it? To me..OH YES!!
But if you are ready for a dog that demands tons of exercise, loves wildlife in your backyard, needs frequent grooming, and is the sweetest, most beautiful (IMO!) and most fun, loving, velcro dog you could ask for...check out brittanyrescue.org..many wonderful Brittanys available...usually several listed in Ohio. There are breeders in Ohio too...a fair amount of hunting activity, training grounds, clubs up your way. Good luck!
