I recently got a good deal on a bunch of under tank heaters off of ebay: an 8" x 8", a 10" x 10", and an 11" x 17" for $25. The only problem is, they all have that sticky stuff stick them on the tank bottom. They claim that this assists heat transfer, but I personally think it's so that you can't take the heat pad off and have to buy another one should you change tanks. So I was thinking of removing the adhesive with some Goo-Gone or alcohol. Anyone know if this will hurt the pads in any way? If I want them stuck to the tank, then I'll use some duct tape.

I seem to remember the warentee stating that it is void if removed which I thought was funny as how else would you return it. I think the idea is that the tighter the seal the better it worked. Post back the luck you have with them.

Try sticking it to a plate of plexi glass. That way you can interchange it with different tanks.

Most all the UTHs I know make the point that it's not good at all or really safe to move them once they're situated, breaks the little filaments or something, creates a potential fire hazard. If this is pucky, it's at least the pucky I've heard pretty unanimously.
Test the removal chemicals on the top of the pad. Probably won't hurt it.

Well, these aren't the floppy rubber ZooMed undertank heaters. They're Exo-Terra ones. They're encased in plastic and very stiff. Very much like heat tape. So I doubt breaking the filaments is an issue. I've also got a T-Rex Cobra UTH, which is basically the same thing except that it didn't have adhesive on it, and I've switched that one around to five or six different tanks with no damage.
