True. I should have worded that differently. The dog is ... in a way that could hurt a kid, when sitting.

This IS a boxer. We're working on the Sit but since that Boxer "arm" just has to swing out and touch you, I may suggest that it soon get changed to a Down.Judy

Today he is showing signs that he just might know what Sit means. Sometimes. And since he's still not totally sure that his feet are connected to his legs, I'm not sure he knows when he IS sitting and when he's not.
But there IS a glimmer of something. I'm making a big deal about it so the owners will feel really encouraged that they can do this.

And while we were sitting in their front yard this evening, a couple pulled in with* a toddler. The puppy was very excited but with the use of the leash to hold him back and slightly downward, he was sitting more than jumping. It was very promising. And it reminded them *why they're doing it.
I hope the wife and I can do enough to overcome the husband's lackadaisical approach. Before we left, he put his hand down to pet the pup and said "Do you want to sit?" and then decided - when he of course didn't sit - that the pup was just worn out from all the visiting.
We need to discuss the concept of not giving a half-hearted command. And not giving a command if you're not going to take the steps to make sure it happens.
But baby steps today.

Baby steps for the boxer and baby steps for the husband. Even if the husband is inconsistent, the dog can learn to be consistent with others. Just ask my dogs whether they try to sneak pizza from people at my dinner table when Grandpa isn't in the house.
If the wife is on top of it, and will be supervising dog/kid interactions, it can work out regardless of the husband's need for remedial training.
