Hi! I am planning on getting a new addition to my home and i love the Sun Conures. Everything I have read has made me fall more and more in love. I won't be able to get the bird for the next couple months and I have been online every day researching! My boyfriend says im "slightly" obsessed Emotion: smile I live in Hawaii, Kauai. There are only 2 pet shops on the island and only one that carries parrots. The owner of the shop I am working with says that although Conures are lovely birds they are very loud.

To the point where even though she sells the birds she wont keep them in the shop. Although noise is no problem whatsoever for me or my surroundings I would still love to hear what the birds sound like but i cant find a sound clip anywhere. Any help on this or anything you folks think will help would be a blessing. Thanks.

I totally understand where that pet shop owner is coming from. Suns are by far the loudest of the conures. You'll be amazed that such brain-rattling screams could come out of creatures so small. Think macaw, higher pitched but every bit as loud.

That's the bad news. The good news is, it's relative easy to prevent screaming habits with conures. The trick is to not spoil them in the first place. E.g. don't spend more time with them, or pay them more attention than you can devote every single day. A conure will take whatever level of attention he or she gets and demand it on a daily basis. When they don't get it, that's when you'll start having screaming problems.

We've owned suns, duskys and green cheeks and the green cheeks have been the quietest by far. Although they can be spoiled just as easily as other conures.

My mom has a 20 year old sun conure and I can clearly tell you that when he calls his flock or wants attention, the screaming is blood curdling. It's very loud and high pitched.
NOW, let me say that when my mother first got Quack Quack she spent tons of time with him, letting him do what he loves most (which is snuggling inside her shirt and cuddling of any kind) and since my father died she is working full time and doesn't have the time.

Also keep in mind how long any parrot lives before making any purchase. I discussed it with people in the event something happens to us, would they adopt her.
A great source for birds is www.parrotsoftheworld.com and Marc Marone is the shop owner. He shipped my macaw to me and I bought a regular seat for her so she didn't have to be down in the cargo bay.

Just be really sure. Sun Conures are beautiful little birds, but they definitely scream if they don't get what they want. People told me that about my Macaw and I made sure when she was a baby I would whisper to her when she'd scream. Now, she's so cute, she whispers in the morning to call her flock. I just say, shh shh in hushed voice and she gets it. Birds are great, but they are for life. Make sure.

I tried to find Sun Conure's voices, but these are very close. Click on the link, turn up your speakers as loud as they will go and you will have an idea of a Conure's voice.

I have a quiet Sun Conure. He can make noise, but seldom does. My neighbors tell me they never hear him.
He's affectionate, curious, easy to teach tricks to. He craps in the trash can next to the cage. Never on me or the furniture. Taught himself that one. Don't know how he knows, but he knows.

He talks to me. He'll stand on my finger and we will carry on a conversation.
A great pet. Read some books, like "Guide to a well behaved parrot."

Yes, but it sounds as if you spend a great deal of time with your Conure. Many people are not prepared for how much time you must spend with a pet bird. My Macaw also poops in the basket, but we taught her that. It took ten minutes for her to learn.
