I was reading a web page yesterday that said that in nature, birds like to tear up things, and that you should give them all kinds of toys they can tear up and shred, then take them out and give them more things they can tear up.
Can someone elaborate on this theme please? They mentioned ropes, paper, all kinds of things. What's safe and what's not?
I see at http://www.nextag.com/Wesco 2702032/brand-html

they have:
"Plexy Paper Shredder Parrot Toy to Tear Up Paper
MOST POPULAR!!! Simple plexy ring bird toy on a welded chain holds a rolled up newspaper for your parrot to rip apart. What fun!! Very economical toy."
but I can't imagine that news print would be good for birds. In fact I'd give them some brown unbleached natural paper, if I could find some.

Take a toilet paper cardboard inner tube. Cut it into two shorter cylinders. Slit each cylinder halfway up, repeatedly, to make like a hula skirt. Bend the strips outward to flare the skirt. Toss these into the cage. They love them.
Be sure to use only household tubes from toilet paper, paper towels, aluminum foil, etc. Any industrial or construction product may be contaminated and hurt your birdies.

Is it safe from chemicals though?
I gave my lovebird a small square of white paper today and he played with tearing it up for about 10 minutes, he loved it. He started by punching holes around the perimeter with his beak.

But then I realized that it's bleached paper and may not be good for him.
I wonder where to get natural organic brown sheets of paper? Whole Foods maybe?

I know paper towel tubes have glue on them too.

I'd be careful with the household stuff too.

I understand your precautions.
I have been giving my two tiels this for 9 years. They have never been sick even once. They get excited when I give them new ones to play with.

Cool, thanks! Gonna try it.
Now that I know to look for "shredder toys", they even have stuff on ebay.

Looks like they're selling a bunch of those old chinese finger cuffs for the birds to shred up, made of bamboo.
Safe?

Mama Bear,
I also buy the woven palm shredder strips from the pet store. My boys love these even more. They destroy them very quickly and then they are bored again. I can't afford to keep them in these things. If you find a cheap source for them please post it.

My love birds like dried corn husks to tear up. All natural, but I'm going to try the hula-tubes.

Are these bamboo sleeves safe for the bird? Anyone know?

Are they like palm fronds? The long leaves from palm trees?

My family is in Florida and could probably send them to me.
