I let the boys out for a late night potty break 2 nights ago, not knowing that there was a deer standing 10 feet from the front door. They flew across the porch and the poor doe probably thought it was Armageddon... But! only one "STOP!" and both dogs skidded to a halt and came back to the porch when called.
I was amazed since the deer was only a couple jumps ahead of them.

today, Manu got to prove his "leave it" actually worked outside the house. i mean, it's one thing to walk ... my trainer calls leave it, "the command of opportunity". and this certainly was an opportunity to test him on it.

Exactly. Praise your dog when he makes eye contact with you, and pretty soon your voice prompt will attract his eye contact and divert him from whatever else he is reacting to. Manu heard you say "look at me!" and you have conditioned him to look to you in the expectation of a reward praise. So he forgets the smell, looks at you, and gets his reward.
This is what Jerry teaches in his manual you know. It's what a zillion books and videos teach. It's a mere parlor trick that anyone with half a brain can learn.
Which is not to say it works with all dogs in every situation because there have to be a zillion exceptions, probably including the fear-biting GSDs bred for the amusement of society ladies. But it works for most normal dogs owned by normal people.

More GOOD DOGS!
I vividly remember getting our first test of "ignore prey prey and listen to me". Kali spotted a rabbit (before I did) and started to take off after him as he headed for the street. I gave a COME! and she stopped on a dime and came right to me, I couldn't have been prouder and took her into the kitchen and totally stuffed her face (Jackpot!).
