today, Manu got to prove his "leave it" actually worked outside the house. i mean, it's one thing to walk by a toy or a treat when he's in his own home, and there's a good chance he'll get an even better treat at the end. but what he did today was an entirely different story.

on the way back from coffee this morning, we saw a freshly splattered raccoon on the side of the road. and when i say fresh, i do mean fresh. steaming, even. Manu noticed it before i did, and he started pulling towards it. his leash manners have been pretty good of late, so i knew there was something up even before i saw it. i said, "leave it", and then, "right here, look at me!", to get his attention. he looked and i started making a huge fuss, dancing around and singing, "good boy, Manu!". then we were past it and he completely forgot about it. i was very excited about this. the idea of pulling a warm raccoon carcass out of his mouth was not one i was looking forward to.
my trainer calls leave it, "the command of opportunity". and this certainly was an opportunity to test him on it.

What a good boy! Can you send him over so he can teach Khan a thing or two about behaving himself?Yesterday was not a good day for taking the dogs out because they were predicting rain. Lots and lots of it. And it was getting so foggy. We decided to take Khan and Izzy out to a nearby park that's a really well kept secret, and since the chances of encountering anyone there is pretty much zero (I've come across 1 person/dog in the 3 years we've been walking there), let them off leash. After behaving fairly decently until we were almost done with the walk, Khan just really blew it.

They were both running ahead of us, and went straight on the trail instead of making a left. We called them after we made the turn and Izzy came running, but no sign of Khan. After a few seconds, I decided to go after him, calling his name. The furry beast was walking towards me from the woods, so slowly that I thought that he had hurt himself. Nope. He was busy trying to swallow something he had in his mouth. As soon as I saw it, I asked him to drop it, which he did.

He just stood there, looking first at what he dropped, and then at me. I called him, and he walked to me reluctantly, dragging his butt, looking back longingly at whatever dead thing it was that he had left behind. His off-leash privileges have hereby been revoked.

that is a fantastic idea. i'll charge a fee, and then sell his address to spammers for yet another fee. sounds like a win-win situation to me!

thanks, i think so too! the other day we had a friend visiting, and the two dogs were pretty excited about it because we don't have people over often. Lola showed her pleasure by running up to him every 10 seconds or so and licking his hand, then bouncing back and play-bowing, all while staring at him. yes, it's adorable, but can become annoying, and "easy" only works for a few minutes with her.

Manu, OTOH, just sits there, back perfectly straight, chin slightly up, and just within arms reach, so you can scratch his ears if you like. our guest commented on how calm and dignified his behavior was. it's amazing how different my two are from one another. the SO often remarks that we'd have the perfect dog if we could combine the best of the two of them.
i think they're pretty perfect as is though.
