Well here's another update about my recent adventures with my newly adopted mini pin. I decided on a name finally instead of just "min pin" and am now going to call her "blue" since she looked so melancholy the first couple days. :}
The good news is she's eating but she's also a VERY finicky eater. Her previous owner must have spoiled her good because she seems to completely reject her dry dog food. It's nutro lamb & rice in case you're wondering which other min pin owners on various websites have advised as being acceptable. Now, is there some way to stop her finicky eating habits and get her to eat her dry dog food? I really don't want to keep feeding her human food because it's not a balanced diet. She loves monterey jack cheese too..
She's also much more active than I initially thought. I'm seeing some of that typical mini-pin mischievious quality people always talk about. She'll run at me at full gallop and slide on the floor licking or gently biting my ankle. She also likes to investigate open containers and generally get into things she's not supposed to. Oh, and she finally barked Emotion: smile, apparently there was something rustling around in the bushes and she let out 3 little alarm barks.

Today I finally taught her to sit when accepting treats but is there a website or something that will give tips on how to train "recall" and other basic commands?
Thanks a lot guys.

My advice because my Pem has tendencies to be finicky at times is don't feed human food at all until she eats her dry food. In fact a dog will not starve itself to death. Many of the Pem breeders assured me of this. She may skip a couple of meals but in the end she will give into the dry food. I would say maybe 3 skipped meals at most. Then the trick is to not offer human food or canned food for a while, until you have noticed your dog is readily eating the food. You may want to try another kibble or two though.
Best of luck.

Sometimes dogs are labeled as finicky when they really have a dental problem. Check her mouth thoroughly and see if you can spot a broken tooth or something that doesn't look right like a large lump or bubble in the gums, swollen or discolored gums, etc. Oral pain is sometimes the cause of a dog not wanting to eat dry food.

A pretty good website for pet owners is www.petplace.com

True, that. It took Shilo an entire day without to finally gobble her fairly bland RD kibble. But eat she did!

Yeah, but isn't Shilo a beagle? (Do I remember correctly?) If so, that's not a fair comparison!

Gwen's right - don' ofer anything else. Or maybe even try out other brands. My Pem-X is very picky. Her favorite kibble is Pro Plan chicken & rice. I guess it tastes good! And it's an OK kibble too so that's all we feed here. I usually mix in some canned food to make it more exciting - she loves those yucky little Cesar things - the one with chicken and liver. It's worth a shot.
