Did you see it? I thought it was fascinating though not for the reasons they intended.
If you didn't, the host, John Stossel, got a Tibetan Terrier puppy with all the ususal puppy problems. He's dedicated, and took it to an Andrea Arden class. Excellent footage of reward training vs. traditional, and the pup was making good progress. Then, for reasons never explained, he turned the pup over to"The Dog Whisperer" (Kerns? Kearns?) (an 'alpha' advocate jerk and shake) who took him away for training .. and returned a BITER! At the end of the segment, Stossel was offering his dog to Barbara Walters.

Yes - he said the classes were $300 for 6 lessons. Ouch!

It seemed like the main reason for this was that he was still having problems (mostly mouthiness and overprotection). Tibetan Terriers, IIRC, have basically the same background as Lhasas - guardian. I'd expect one to bark at strangers and need a lot of socialization to overcome its natural wariness. As far as the biting - the dog has a hard mouth, but Stossel and the trainer both called him aggressive.
But - OMG - what was that video they were showing to demonstrate "old" training techniques? Hanging a dog by its neck on a choke collar, jerking it into a closer front, jerking on it and stuffing a bumper into its mouth. I think someone ought to email him a link to Dogwise so he can buy "Dogs are From Neptune" - Jean Donaldson's book about aggression in pet dogs. (I'd say buy him a copy, but anyone who can afford $300 for a celebrity trainer can buy his own book!)

When the Dog Whisperer's black GSD? reached over and grabbed Stossel's pants after an inept maneuver on his part, I had an aha!. Dylan did that to me a few times when I was training her. At the time, it didn't occur to me that *I* was the one with the problem; I thought she was being difficult. Hmmm.
Re the biting - I noticed that when Stossel was handing the dog treats and she(?) came at him too fast, he yanked his hand back, and that seemed to stimulate her to move in more quickly. I think she had the biting problem before he took her to the first trainer, and it got worse as she matured.

Did they say how old the dog was when the story was taped?

Kudos to him for being willing to let his ineptness with the dog be shown on TV, for pointing out the importance of training, and for pointing out that having a dog can be a big commitment in time and effort. I didn't get the sense that he thought he was well-rewarded for it, however.

Stossel's pretty well-known for making stuff up and distorting the rest. His "reports" tend to be
very propagandistic, and while I'm a news junkie I change the channel when he comes on.

Re the biting - I noticed that when Stossel was handing the dog treats and she(?) came at him too ... shot, and her body dumped in the desert. I want coyotes to gnaw on her bones. I didn't like her.

Oh, yeah. Forgot that part. The more I think about that piece the more outraged I get. That 'Dog Whisperer' ... shot, and her body dumped in the desert. I want coyotes to gnaw on her bones. I didn't like her.

Hey, Chris, did you forget to take your thorazine again?

If you'll just give me your address, I think I can arrange to have some friends of mine drop off a new supply, yup, gratis.

You're sounding a little unhinged lately.
Yes, even more than you usually do.
