Sure you don't want Duke? He'll not only alarm bark, he'll make it sound like so much fun that Ms Burrito Butt will want to join in.

i've tried that. when she's with barky dogs, she takes more notice of comings and goings, but she still doesn't bark. i guess she figures that someone else has Barking Duty under control?
Of course, you'll be ready to ship him back in a month, but that's okay, too.

i dunno. barking aside , i think i'd really like Duke.

To be perfectly honest, it makes me very, very suspicious. I mean, what kind of human being in their right mind would be out there unless they had doggie company?

a human who wants to get from Point A to Point B?

harriet does the Boxer woo-woo when i'm on the phone (i think she's perplexed by the whole telephone thing),

Our previous schnauzer used to run to the phone when it rang. And if he was left home and someone left a message, he would lead us to the machine. "Look! There were VOICES!"
That's better than our breeder - who had to move one of her phones when one of her dogs took to answering it when it rang. He wouldn't talk, just knocked the receiver off and made the ringing noise stop. (We don't know which was his intention.). But it meant that no one ever got through to her answering machine - and after the first call, everyone else was going to get a busy signal until she got home.

And speaking of Lucy singing the collie-wa-wa blues, we've discovered that when certain people get home and, as a result, Lucy is VERY happy, one can grab her and play her like a smooth-coated, sable guitar (IOW rub her side and she'll wa-wa).

Aww. How sweet for both of them!

He's an endearing critter, much as I hate to admit being enthralled by a common Big Black Dog. There's something so appealing about a 70 lb dog trying ever-so-hard to be cute and winsome that he's really hard to resist.

Watching him go from blank-stare slate to transparently manipulative slydog ("hey, I can make the lady let me outside! I can make the lady give me cookies! I can make the lady sleep on THAT side of the bed! If I poke her here* and look adorably cute *there and bounce a little with my toes all poking wide apart, the world is minemineMINE!") was one of the most rewarding dog-related things I've ever witnessed.
Not only does he make me laugh, he encourages me to laugh at his antics. (I think I'm going to have to retract my offer. Duke's far too useful here for me to be lending him out. Sorry 'bout that.)

Good dog!

Not that kind of walk, silly. Trail walking. The kind where you have to go park your car some place and then go for a walk. Suspicious, I tellya.

it just means that his Magic Powers are that much stronger than those of "cute" dogs.

oh my. how could you not fall for him?
i prefer manipulative dogs. from a practical point of view, it makes it much easier for me to work with them if they understand A) what they want and B) how to get it.
