I acquired a pathetic throw away yesterday. This time, a sick Honduran Milksnake.

He is breathing terribly and has mucous in his mouth (mouthrot). I saved him from a man who had him in an aquarium with no heat and terrible environmental conditions (crap in the water bowl and all over the cage).

He's beyond the molt stage with his old skin intact and he's struggling to shed. When I pick him up, he opens his mouth to breath about every 5-6 seconds.

I've never had a snake this sick, and he appears to be on his last leg. Any suggestions to accommodate him until I get can him to the vet on Monday are appreciated.

I'm certainly no expert but as I seem to have got to your post first I'll just say what I would do in your position until someone more knowledgable come along.

I think humidity is the key here. Can you get almost 100% humidity in his cage? Perhaps place a steam bath near him? It will help with his breathing and his shedding problems too. Are you sure he has mouth rot or is it a particularly bad respiratory infection? Either way he's gonna need antibiotics. Froglet may be best to advise here as she's been there and done it. Is Baytril used in reptiles? If so how do you feel about injecting this little guy? I think that may be the only way to go as I'm not sure you could get anything down him orally.

Do you not have any out of hours vets you could contact? If not just get the humidity up as high as you can until you can get him to a vet. I wish you all the best in aiding his recovery.

I have his humidity as high as I keep my boids. I've soaked a wash cloth and placed it over a small rock hide that he seems to have been drawn to (which is warm as well).

You are right, he needs antibiotics, and he needs them asap.

I don't have access to a vet until Monday, and even then, she doesn't specialize in reptiles but has prescribed medication based upon my recommendations in the past.

I've given him a lukewarm bath 3 times today to try and loosen up the skin a bit, and followed up w/ hydrogen peroxide inside the mouth via a swab.

This little guy is in bad shape.

Thanks for the response.

I'd suggest not injecting Baytril - I had very bad results from Baytril injections and am still seeing the repurcussions in my milksnake 6 months later. I've had good results injecting Amakacin Sulfate into snakes, hopefully your vet can dose/prescribe that.

If I were in your shoes I'd crank his heat up to the low 90s and keep him nice and moist. Get him a moist hide built, you might want to put the damp washcloth right inside the rock hide with him and change it out daily for a fresh one. I'd also not use any substrate beyond newspaper or paper towels. I'd also keep up with the soaks.

Best of luck Adam... I love honduran milksnakes. Even the ones that make you ask "why is this herp still alive? Someone should put it out of its misery!!" sometimes shock me with their resiliancy and bounce back 100%. If there is anything I can do to help... don't hesitate to ask.

I'm using it right now on my little green tree python (orally, diluted with water). I still must see if it works, but I'm only at the third day of treatment.

If it's mouth root, have you tried to wipe out the dead tissue in his mouth with a wadding stick? I am no expert, since I never had a snake with mouth root, but I read it often. I hope your snake makes it.

Anna
Adam, I certainly salute your effort and I didn't mean to seem brusque with you off list yesterday but I have no idea of how to portion 'human' antibiotics for snake use and even those few which I know can be used for snakes..the one you mentioned to me I'd never read of being used on a reptile..are best apportioned by people who at least have the Frye book or another such book or some experience.

I just felt you were better off asking someone with some herp experience than asking me.
